We are just weeks away from finally meeting the newest member of the royal family. And, while Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have remained hush-hush on their royal baby’s gender, their close friend, Serena Williams might have let it slip.

Rumors surrounding Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s baby’s gender first sparked early in their pregnancy when the Duke of Sussex revealed he hopes for a daughter — and they have continued to escalate since. Following his comments, the Duchess of Sussex noted that she and her husband decided to keep their baby’s gender a secret. However, following Meghan Markle’s New York City baby shower, some thought the Duchess of Sussex might have told friends she and Prince Harry are expecting a baby boy.
The royal baby gender saga continued last week when Serena Williams gave some revealing information to E! News. The tennis star sat down with the media outlet and discussed what Meghan Markle will be like as a mom, stating: “She’ll be the best mom, for sure.” But, then, she went on to discuss an unnamed friend, which made everyone wonder if she was still talking about the Duchess of Sussex.
“My friend is pregnant and she’s like, ‘Oh, my kid’s going to do this.’ And I just looked at her and I was like, ‘No, she’s not,’” she told E! News. Williams immediately followed up with “I’m like, ‘No, you’re not,’” which made some people wonder if she backtracked and corrected herself because of who she was potentially discussing.
Are Prince Harry and Meghan Markle having a girl?
It’s unclear whether or not Williams accidentally revealed Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s baby’s gender. But, one thing’s for certain: We won’t find out until after the royal baby’s arrival.
Even if Prince Harry and Meghan Markle already know their baby’s gender — which goes against royal family rules — it’s tradition to keep the gender a secret from the public until the official birth announcement.
Royal baby girl names
If the Duke and Duchess of Sussex do welcome a baby girl this spring, they have plenty of royal baby names to choose from.
Some believe Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will include Diana and Elizabeth in their daughter’s name, in honor of the queen and the late Princess Diana. However, those aren’t the only top contenders.
In addition to Diana and Elizabeth, some think the Duke and Duchess of Sussex might name their daughter “Lily” as a nod to Queen Elizabeth’s childhood nickname — and the name Prince Philip calls her — “Lilibet.”
Another potential royal baby? Victoria, after Queen Victoria. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle could name their daughter after the iconic royal leader in honor of their feminist ideals. Others think the Duke and Duchess of Sussex could name their baby girl Alexandra, which means “helper of mankind” as a nod to their philanthropic passions.
