Serena Williams Says Meghan Markle is ‘Always There’ For Her When She Calls Her ‘Crying, Upset”

Friendship knows no bounds.

Even though Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex, has been juggling royal duties and being a new mom — she and Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, welcomed son, Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor in May 2019 — she’s still remained a source of support for her friend, Serena Williams.

Williams calls Meghan Markle ‘crying, upset’ and is ‘always there’

During an interview with Access Hollywood on Nov. 7, 2019, where the tennis champion and designer promoted her new line of jewelry, she spoke highly of her BFF.

“I just really think she’s the strongest, literally the strongest person I know and the nicest, sweetest,” Williams said of Markle. “She flew all the way with a newborn to see me play in New York and flew all the way back that night and I probably couldn’t have done that,” the 38-year-old said referring to the U.S. Open Tennis Championship held in New York City in Sept. 2019, where she lost to 19-year-old Bianca Andreescu of Canada. Markle cheered on her friend sitting amongst Williams’s husband, Alexis Ohanian, and Vogue editor-in-chief/ tennis fan, Anna Wintour.

“It kinda goes to show you what an amazing person that she is and that’s just one of the many things that she does for me,” Williams continued. “I call her, text her anytime, crying, upset – she’s always there.”

“Doesn’t matter what she’s going through, she just sets time away and she’s just so amazing,” she added.

Williams went to Markle’s wedding

Both women have shown their support for each other on numerous occasions. Williams and her husband were guests at the Markle and Prince Harry’s royal wedding, where they attended not only the ceremony held at St. George’s Chapel but an exclusive evening reception at Frogmore House.

Markle wore one of her BFF’s designs

During the duke and duchess’s first official royal tour after their wedding, the Duchess of Sussex wore a blazer designed by the 23-time Grand Slam winner that sold out almost immediately thanks to the Meghan Effect.

Clearly, the two make time for each other. Williams planned Markle’s New York City baby shower, which she later called a tough thing to do because she wanted it to “perfect.”  Guests arranged flowers that were later donated and munched on baby-themed cookies. Markle’s longtime makeup artist, Daniel Martin, also responsible for her wedding day look, posted a picture of the adorable cookies from Markle’s baby shower on Instagram.

How did Serena Williams and Meghan Markle meet?

Williams and Markle met in Feb. 2014 when they both participated in DirectTV’s Celebrity Beach Bowl. They bonded while playing flag football, which the Duchess of Sussex wrote about on her now-defunct blog, The Tig

“We hit it off immediately, taking pictures, laughing through the flag football game we were both playing in, and chatting not about tennis or acting, but about all the good old fashioned girly stuff,” the Duchess of Sussex wrote. “So began our friendship.”

Markle called Williams her “confidante, a “down to earth chick,” and someone who “couldn’t be a better friend.” She also wrote that she wanted to do the same the professional athlete. With what Williams has said about the 38-year-old we’re thinking she’s achieved that goal.
