‘Sex and the City’: Why Kim Cattrall Thought She Would Be Playing a Mom When She Got Cast
Sex and the City wouldn’t be as iconic without Samantha Jones. And who else could perfect the role other than Kim Cattrall? Yet when she got cast on the hit HBO series, she assumed she would be playing a mom. Keep reading to find out why.
Kim Cattrall initially rejected the role of Samantha Jones
Before accepting the life-altering role, Cattrall rejected the opportunity to play the promiscuous PR woman. She didn’t think it was appropriate at her age (which was 41 at the time) to be playing such a sexual character.
In fact, Cattrall was so determined not to play the part that the producers ended up casting another woman as Samantha Jones. According to the book titled Sex and the City and Us, they originally cast Lou Thornton for the part. But according to the series producer, Darren Star, he wanted an older woman to play Samantha. Thornton, who was in her 30s at the time, posed as a problem.
“The problem was that she was in her 30s, I think,” Star told Deadline. “And it was changing who Samantha was. Samantha was ten years older than the other girls, a totally different experience.”
But after some heavy convincing, he finally talked Cattrall into playing the part of Samantha. The Canadian actor was finally wooed into playing the role that would eventually change her life.
Why the ‘Sex and the City’ actor thought she would be playing a mom
According to Cattrall, she thought she would be playing a mother to one of the main women on Sex and the City. This was mainly due to her being older than the leading characters on the show.
“I never thought I’d be playing this character at this age in my life,” she said, according to Mental Floss. “I thought I’d be playing somebody’s mom … The other girls on the show are ten years younger than I am, so I have to get enough sleep and work out and watch what I eat. Just running around New York City is a good way to keep in shape.”
Kim Cattrall says the show is the reason she never became a mother
According to the actor, Sex and the City is the reason why she never became a mother in real life. As the actor admits, she worked 19-hour-days and would never have enough time to take care of a child.
But despite not having kids, Cattrall says that she is still a parent.
“I am a parent,” she said in an interview with BBC Radio. “I have young actors and actresses that I mentor, and have nieces and nephews that I am very close to.”
She continued, saying, “There is a way to become a mother at this day in age that doesn’t include your name on the child’s birth certificate … You can express that maternal side of you very clearly, very strongly.”
“There are many different ways to be a mom in the world,” the actor concludes.
