Shameless fans were shocked when Emmy Rossum revealed that she is leaving the show after Season 9. She didn’t go into her reason why but now that has been revealed. She also answered whether she ever plans to return in smaller appearances. Here is everything you need to know about Rossum’s plans for the future.

Emmy Rossum said the door is open for her to come back to Shameless

The Shameless star revealed the reason she decided to quit the show and whether she could return. “I made 110 episodes playing the character of Fiona, and it’s been an incredible journey,” she told Shape. “I’ve learned a lot about myself as a person and as an actor. I want to leave the show while I still love it, and I know the door is open to come back if that feels right. I’m also extremely proud of what I was able to accomplish off-screen, with my negotiation for equal pay and the effect that had on other women in the industry and in general.”

She plans to continue writing, directing and acting

Emmy Rossum is in a thriller called Cold Pursuit that comes out in Feb. 2019. She also revealed in the interview what she plans to do next. “The way I look at it is that the end of one thing is the beginning of something else,” she said. “I couldn’t be more thrilled to spend time writing, directing, and seeing what other characters I want to play. It’s both scary and wonderful.”

Rossum previously announced she was leaving the show on Facebook

The actress revealed the big news on Facebook and showed her support for the remaining cast members. “I can say for certain that this cast and crew, who I’ve been have truly honored to work alongside, are world class,” she said. “I am proud and I’m filled with gratitude. I know you will continue on without me, for now. There is much more Gallagher story to be told. I will always be rooting for my family. Try not to think of me as gone, just think of me as moving down the block.”

Since Rossum said that there will be a possibility she could return it’s probably safe to say that Fiona won’t be killed off. Showrunner John Wells already talked about working on sending the character off in the Season 9 finale.

“We are hard at work now creating a Season 9 finale…which we hope will provide a Gallagher-worthy sendoff for Fiona that honors the great work Emmy has done,” he told TV Line. “It is always bittersweet when an ensemble member decides to move out of the proverbial house, but our door will always remain open for Fiona to return home for a visit, or to move back in.”

The showrunner also said that he expects there will be a Season 10 of Shameless. “I look forward to continuing the stories of this wildly unpredictable family.”
