‘Shark Tank’: Meredith Jurica Explains How to Improve Your Chances on the Show
Are you thinking of pitching your product on Shark Tank? Showbiz Cheat Sheet chatted with Meredith Jurica about her experience on the show. Here are some tips she shared about how to improve your chances.
Practice your ‘Shark Tank’ pitch
Jurica suggests practicing before pitching the Sharks. She made sure to practice with some of the other contestants beforehand. “You should know what you want to say, that way you can hit all your high points about your product and make sure you don’t miss anything,” Jurica told Showbiz Cheat Sheet. “So, me and my other friends that I met on the show would go to the hotel and practice with each other.”
The Makeup Bag Junkie founder says she asked the other contestants for their suggestions and requested feedback on her pitch. This helped her build confidence and correct any issues with her presentation.
Make sure you look the part
Make sure your outfit is appropriate. Jurica says the producers will take a look at your outfits and approve one of them. “You have to wear a specific outfit that they approve,” Jurica tells Showbiz Cheat Sheet. She says you’ll have to bring a few clothing choices with you so the producers can choose an outfit that looks good on camera.
Jurica says she had a mishap with the dress she wore on the show, but everything worked out. The producers were about to send her home at first because they ran out of time and didn’t have a space for her on the show. They said they would try to bring her back the following season, but that didn’t provide much consolation.
Jurica went back to her hotel room and cried, getting guacamole all over her dress in the process. Much to her surprise, she got a call later that night. The producers had room for her that season, so she was invited to come back and pitch her product.
“I was so excited, but then I looked at my dress, and I was like, ‘Oh no!’” says Jurica. “So, I had to wash my Shark Tank dress with shampoo in the hotel bathtub, blow dry it, and wear it on national television.”
Apply for ‘Shark Tank’ online
Jurica recommends perfecting your idea before you apply. Once you have everything in place, she says it’s best to apply online. Jurica met people who went to an open casting call where they had 60 seconds to give an elevator pitch. However, she says there can be drawbacks to applying this way.
“I liked the online application because I got to take my time and tell them exactly what I wanted to say and upload as many pictures as I wanted,” says Jurica. “I feel like it was more thorough.”
Know how to answer potential questions
The first time you will meet any of the Sharks will be on camera, so know what you’re going to say. “It’s the first time they’re seeing you or ever heard of you, so you’ve really got to bring your best,” says Jurica.
Don’t forget to relax. Although you’re there for business, don’t forget to enjoy some down time. Jurica says she was at the location for one week, and there were some off days in between taping. She took that time to enjoy herself and see the sights around town.
