Mark Cuban of ABC’s Shark Tank recently superfan Selena Gomez a birthday greeting for her 27th birthday on July 22. Now Cuban is the one getting well wishes as he celebrated his 61st birthday on July 31. One birthday message from a fellow shark was especially harmonious.
Earlier this week, Cuban’s birthday video to popstar Gomez received a lot of attention, especially since few knew that Gomez is such a Shark Tank fan. Set up by Gomez’s friends, the video message started out with clips from The Office, Friends, and a music video from BFF Taylor Swift. The video then cut to Shark Tank, with a special message from Cuban. “Hey Selena it’s Mark Cuban from Shark Tank. I just wanted to say happy 27th birthday,” the billionaire investor said. “Enjoy. Hope you have many, many more. Thank you for watching.”
Gomez was visibly thrilled, only to then receive a Shark Tank ‘bonus’ gift. After Cuban’s message, the singer found out that she was also getting a trip to the set to watch the hit reality show being taped in September. In all the publicity, Cuban never mentioned that he also has a birthday in July. But some of his ‘sharky’ friends did on social media.
Cuban on karaoke? Really?
Mark Cuban is known for many roles – NBA team owner of the Dallas Mavericks, billionaire tech guru, film producer, and mentor to entrepreneurs to name a few. ‘Singer’ has never been in his list of titles… so far.
Fellow shark, FUBU founder, and friend Daymond John decided to send Cuban his birthday wishes in song. The fashion mogul posted a duet of himself and Cuban, singing the song “Ebony and Ivory,” originally by Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder. The caption read, “Happy birthday to my man @mcuban. The Ivory to my Ebony, “ along with the laughing/crying emoji. The dynamic duo is clearly enjoying their time on stage, though Cuban is sure to stick to investing rather than harmonizing.
He received other birthday wishes from his co-sharks, including a tweet from Lori Greiner posting, “Wishing a big happy birthday to the fun and playful @mcuban!!” with birthday emojis. Also sending greetings was guest shark and Real Housewives of New York’s Bethenny Frankel, tweeting, “Happy Birthday @mcuban, from one shark to another! Of course it’s #SharkWeek and your birthday! This could not be more perfect. #SharkTank #HappyBirthday #Skinnygirl #Entrepreneur #FemaleCEO #APlaceOfYes #MarkTank”
Frankel was referencing the Discovery Network’s week-long campaign devoted to all things shark – the ocean kind, that is.
A true friendship
John has often spoken of his friendships with his fellow sharks. He told Inc. magazine that he’s gone clubbing with Kevin ‘Mr. Wonderful’ O’Leary, spent time at Barbara Corcoran’s beach house, has playdates for his kids with Robert Herjavec’s kids, cracks jokes to Lori Greiner between takes, and will have a frequent casual night out with Cuban.
The FUBU founder also knows how Cuban tends to invest. “Mark has a lot of money. He could buy all the sharks probably a couple times over, so he’s like, ‘You know what? I’ll take a gamble.’ He has more to gamble and play with,” John told Inc. “And he’s going to be very hands-on, but don’t call him every single day. You need a million dollars? Mark could give you two – just don’t call him until it’s time for heavy lifting.”
John said Cuban also expects his entrepreneurs to work… and work hard. “He’s also the guy saying, ‘I don’t want to hear about any other jobs, any other aspirations. You asked for one million, and I’ll give you two, but I want you to work every single day just like I would, 24 hours a day.”
Happy Birthday to Mark Cuban!
