‘Shark Tank’s’ Robert Herjavec Reveals His Marriage Proposal to Kym Johnson Was a ‘Little Awkward’
This year, Shark Tank’s Robert Herjavec celebrated his third wedding anniversary to former Dancing With The Stars champ Kym Johnson. While the couple is clearly enjoying wedded bliss, it’s hard to imagine that Herjavec’s proposal to Johnson didn’t go as smoothly as he’d planned.
Herjavec and Johnson met on the set of ABC’s Dancing With The Stars in 2015 when they were paired as partners for the competition show. For Herjavec, the attraction was instant, and he was never shy about singing Johnson’s praises. “I don’t do anything for publicity,” Herjavec told People in 2015. “From the moment I met her, I love hanging out with her. We are having a great time.”
When Herjavec finally worked up the nerve to ask Johnson out for a date, he claimed she turned him down. “I had this whole plan. We were going to go for dinner, the whole nine yards,” he said in 2016, according to People. “Then she just comes up and she goes, ‘Oh, by the way, tonight I can’t go’ and walks out the door.”
Obviously, Johnson came around and took up Herjavec on his invitation. We were friends first,” she shared. “We got to know each other on a friendship level. That developed into something else. We’re both each other’s number one fans, and have respect for each other.”
Though they didn’t win the coveted Mirrorball Trophy, the two got a trip down the aisle and matching wedding bands, saying their ‘I Do’s’ in 2016.
This past July, Herjavec and Johnson posted romantic anniversary wishes to each other on Instagram. “3 years ago today 🤵👰👼👼🐶 💕” Johnson wrote in the post, along with a slide show of several black-and-white photos from their special day in 2016.
Herjavec captioned his pic, “My ❤️ happy anniversary @kymherjavec5678,” also along with several images from their wedding day.
The couple welcomed twins Hudson and Haven in April 2018, celebrating their first birthday earlier this year. The family journeyed to Australia to mark the milestone. “We went to Sydney. We stayed at this beautiful place right on Bondi Beach,” Herjavec told Us Weekly in May. “They loved it.”
Popping the question
Johnson has a very clear memory of Herjavec’s proposal, describing the moment as very romantic. “He’d been acting a little strange, I have to say, all week,” Johnson recalled, according to ABC News. “The day that we did it, he had these flowers all set up in the house and we went up to the rooftop and there was a swan and the ring and fairy lights. It was very romantic, very sweet, and he got down on his knee and proposed. It was beautiful.”
Herjavec had a special plan for popping the question, which he kept a secret for quite some time. “I didn’t let anybody know until a week before because I’m really bad at surprises and I was afraid I’d mess it up,” he said.
When he finally got down on when knee to ask the treasured question, he had to wait for an answer … longer than he expected. “When I asked Kym she started crying and she didn’t say anything, so I asked a second time and she kept on crying. And I asked a third time and she didn’t say anything, and I’m saying, ‘This is getting a little awkward.’” As now everyone knows, things turned out in Herjavec’s favor. “She said ‘yes’ finally,” he shared.
The Shark Tank star had more planned for Johnson. “We ended up going back to his condo and there was a big surprise party and I opened the door and my mom was there as well. She came over from Australia,” Johnson gushed. “It was just a really magical night.”
With a romance like theirs, who needs the Mirrorball?
