‘Shark Tank’s’ Robert Herjavec Says He Got This Great Piece of Advice From Mark Cuban
Robert Herjavec of ABC’s Shark Tank is a fan favorite on the show and known for both his business acumen and down-to-earth nature. The millionaire investor often shares advice to aspiring entrepreneurs, and apparently is happy to receive solid words of wisdom as well. Herjavec revealed that his fellow shark, billionaire Mark Cuban, once told him something that truly made a difference in his life.
Successful professionally and personally
With his top-ranked cybersecurity firm The Herjavec Group consistently bringing in profits, Herjavec has proven himself as a successful business mogul. Between running the lucrative company, filming episodes for the hit reality show, and working with his entrepreneurs, calling Herjavec a success is probably an understatement.
The shark also has a full home life, recently celebrating his third wedding anniversary with Dancing With The Stars alum Kym Johnson. Now proud parents of 1-year-old twins Haven and Hudson, the couple is enjoying the pleasures of domestic life.
“I’m just so happy,” Johnson told People in June 2018, shortly after the twins were born. “I was just hoping that the babies would be healthy… and to have two beautiful, healthy babies is the most incredible thing.”
Lessons from his parents
Herjavec frequently shares stories of his parents, who immigrated to Canada from Croatia when he was just 8 years old. He credits his parents for teaching him humility while also inspiring him to work hard.
“When you don’t speak the language or have any money, kids make fun of you,” Herjavec told Inc. “I would say to my mom, ‘Nobody’s nice to me, and all these kids have better lives than me.’ My mom would reply, ‘Nobody in this world is better than you, but you are no better than anyone else.’ That inspired me to get out there and kick some butt and make something of myself.”
Herjavec takes pride in the sacrifices his parents made in order to give their family a better life. The Shark Tank star considers those sacrifices as his top motivation to work his hardest and do his best.
“My dad was the toughest guy I’ve ever known. He was the youngest of fifteen children and his father died before he was born. He left Croatia at 37 years old, didn’t speak English, had one suitcase and no money,” Herjavec said, according to NYSE. “What I learned from him was that you should never complain. The absolute most that life owes you is opportunity, and I’ve always tried to keep in mind what my father confronted and ultimately overcame. Don’t complain – just keep working hard and moving forward.”
Wise words from a fellow shark
The main six panelists on Shark Tank – Barbara Corcoran, Mark Cuban, Lori Greiner, Daymond John, Herjavec, and Kevin O’Leary – have built a strong bond amongst each other over the show’s 11 seasons. Their on-air chemistry continues off-screen as well, where they have formed personal friendships.
The celebrity investors will often share tips with each other, with one in particular that Herjavec remembers receiving from Cuban. “Early in my career I spent most of my time just trying to make a living and protect my downside,” he revealed, “but then Marc Cuban told me when I first started on Shark Tank that I had to dream bigger.”
Apparently, Cuban was on to something with his sage advice. “He was absolutely right – who would have thought that I’d be here on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange having just rung the opening bell,” Herjavec shared, according to NYSE, “not that long ago I didn’t even know this world existed, so my advice to everyone out there is to dream big, always dream big.”
