‘Shark Week 2019’: Every Shark-Related Program Airing on the Discovery Channel This Year
It’s hard to believe, but Shark Week has been a TV fixture for more than 30 years. The annual programming block on the Discovery Channel is one of the most enduring events in television. And it continues to be a ratings juggernaut, reeling in 34.9 million viewers in 2018.
This year’s Shark Week kicks off Sunday, July 28 and continues through Sunday, August 4. Shark fans can tune in to catch more than 20 hours of original programming, including an all-new movie about a terrifying real-life shark encounter.
‘Capsized: Blood in the Water’ airs July 31
This year, Discovery is bringing something new to Shark Week. The network will air its first-ever original feature-length scripted Shark Week movie.
Capsized: Blood in the Water stars Josh Duhamel and tells the true story of a 1982 shark encounter, when a Florida-bound yacht capsized and its crew was left to drift in the Atlantic, where they became prey for hungry sharks.
The movie also stars Tyler Blackburn, Rebekah Graf, Beau Garrett, and Josh Close. It airs Wednesday, July 31 at 9/8c.
The complete Shark Week schedule
Shark Week begins on July 28 with Expedition Unknown: Megalodon at 8 p.m. ET and concludes August 4 with encore presentations of the week’s best shark-related programming.
This year’s Shark Week originals include Legend of Deep Blue, where shark experts Brandon McMillan and Jimi Partington return to Guadalupe Island to continue their search for what may be the world’s largest great white shark, and Extinct or Alive: The Lost Shark, where wildlife biologist and animal tracker Forrest Galante heads to the Indian Ocean to hunt for the supposedly extinct Pondicherry shark, which was last seen in the 1970s.
Also on deck is Isle of Jaws: Blood Brothers, which features a team of shark explorers who have returned for the third time to a remote island off the Australian coast to investigate a pair of brother sharks, and Andrew Mayne: Ghost Diver, which follows the illusionist and inventor as he dons a one-of-a-kind shark suit in an attempt to overcome the sense of a great white.
