‘Sherlock’: What Can You Expect From Season 5?

Arthur Conan Doyle’s beloved detective, Sherlock Holmes, has been the subject of countless film and movie adaptations. Possibly the most popular of the lot is the series that began its run in 2010 and featured Benedict Cumberbatch as the irascible, brilliant detective.

Sherlock is considered to be one of the finest television shows ever produced by the BBC and has entertained fans for four excellent seasons. The fourth season finished airing in early 2017, and ever since then, fans have been wondering if the popular series will ever make a return.

What is ‘Sherlock’ about?

While many of the on-screen adaptations of the Sherlock Holmes stories have been set in Victorian London, around the time when the novels were first written, Sherlock takes place in the present day. However different the setting of the stories, the core outline is still the same, as brilliant investigator Sherlock Holmes and his roommate and partner Dr. John Watson unravel a series of bizarre and baffling mysteries.

Over time, Holmes, although averse to the spotlight and generally rather socially awkward, becomes somewhat of a London celebrity, with both police and ordinary people seeking his help to solve complicated cases.

When the show first premiered in 2010, lead actor Benedict Cumberbatch was a relative unknown, at least, to American audiences. The show skyrocketed him to immense popularity, both in England and the United States, and the show is widely credited with having furthered his career.

Martin Freeman costars as Dr. Watson, with Rupert Graves, Una Stubbs, and Andrew Scott rounding out the talented cast. The show has been praised by critics for its high-quality production values and excellent writing.

Benedict Cumberbatch’s brilliant career

Although Cumberbatch had a thriving career prior to Sherlock and appeared in such films as Amazing Grace, Four Lions, The Whistleblower, and Creation, it wasn’t until after his role as Sherlock Holmes that he started scoring big roles in Hollywood productions. In 2011, Cumberbatch appeared in the Steven Spielberg film War Horse, and in 2012 he lent his voice to the character of Smaug the dragon in The Hobbit series of films.

In the years since Sherlock began, Cumberbatch has appeared in The Fifth Estate, 12 Years a Slave, August: Osage County, Star Trek: Into Darkness, and Black Mass, opposite Johnny Depp. He’s also a certified Marvel superhero, playing Dr. Steven Strange in the films Doctor Strange, Avengers: Infinity War, and Thor: Ragnarok.

Cumberbatch has been honored with numerous awards and accolades and is considered to be one of the finest actors of his generation. Fans have often assumed that the reason for the delay in announcing the fifth season is because of Cumberbatch’s thriving career.

Will the show return for a fifth season?

The final episode of the fourth season of Sherlock aired on January 8th, 2017. While the show’s creator, Steven Moffat, has often stated that there possibly could be a fifth season, nothing has yet been formally announced.

Moffat clarified that there have always been long gaps in between episodes of the show, and the timing could be appropriate for a longer gap, he also has several projects going on that will further delay any production plans for Sherlock

However, a recent report states that insiders close to filming believe that the fifth season could be happening sooner than expected. A London shop owner, who works close to Sherlock’s regular filming locations, revealed that he heard “they’ll be coming back” for a fifth season.

While this has yet to be confirmed by anyone involved with the production, it’s exciting news for fans. Who knows, perhaps by 2020, the world can expect to finally see more of the beloved fictional detective.
