She’s Engaged! A Radiant Hoda Kotb Announces Her Engagement to Boyfriend Joel Schiffman on ‘Today’
Today Show co-anchor Hoda Kotb is engaged! She made the announcement live and on the air during the show’s second hour to a clearly surprised and delighted Jenna Bush Hager, Craig Melvin, Al Roker, and Savannah Guthrie.
Here’s what we know about Kotb’s very happy news.
How she broke it to her Today Show family
The crew had just finished a previous segment and were sitting around the anchor table. When their on-air banter had quieted down, Kotb said, “A friend of mine has a secret.”
Roker, Melvin, Hager, and Guthrie just looked at one another wondering who Kotb could be talking about.
“Her initials are Hoda Kotb, and she’s engaged!”
At that, the entire studio broke out in shrieks of delight and applause, while Kotb displayed her stunning engagement ring that she had successfully kept hidden until this moment. The Today with Hoda and Jenna host explained that Schiffman had surprised her with the ring over the weekend, in an emotional proposal.
When Hoda met Joel
Kotb and Schiffman, who is an investment management company executive, met during a 2013 event. Kotb told Today she was dragging her feet going to gathering. Eventually, she was talked into going by the husband of a Today executive producer.
“It was pouring rain. It was a bunch of Wall Street guys. I had to give a speech. They were bored,” Kotb told guest co-host Andy Cohen, as reported to O, The Oprah Magazine.
At some point, Kotb was signing autographs, when she met Schiffman. The now mother-of-two asked whose name should be on the autograph and Schiffman responded, “Make it out to me.” Kotb was intrigued by Schiffman, and made inquiries about his marital status. Once she found out from another attendee that Schiffman was single, she gave him her email address, and the rest is romantic history!
Hager and Roker’s hilarious comments
After Kotb’s announcement, Hager asked, “How did the girls take it?,” referring to Kotb and Schiffman’s daughters Haley Joy, age 2, and baby Hope Catherine, who the couple just adopted this year.
The newly-engaged Kotb burst into laughter, perhaps because of the hilarity of the question, considering her daughters are still much too young to understand their parents are getting married.
Kotb suggested she might just say, “Mommy and Dadd are getting married!”
At some point in the excitement, Guthrie handed it off to Roker for the weather. He clearly did not want to break up the fun but began covering the nation’s varying temperatures.
While he was doing so, his phone rang on the table and Kotb, noting it was Roker’s wife, Deborah Roberts, answered, live on the air.
“Hi Deborah, Hi! It’s Hoda! Al’s on the air. He’s on the air, he’s doing the weather. I’m engaged!” It was a pretty funny, clearly unscripted moment in the morning show’s usually tightly scheduled proceedings.
Roker shook his head. “This is great,” he said. “She has no idea what I do, no idea,” he said with feigned disappointment that his wife was apparently not watching and unaware that he was on the air.
That’s married life!
