10 Singers Who Walked Off Stage Mid-Concert

There are many celebrities who have a bad reputation because of unprofessional behavior that has led to them being disliked. Walking off stage while performing is definitely a signature of diva behavior and has ruined some great singers’ careers. But not every star who walked off the stage did it for terrible reasons. So who bolted while giving a performance? Here are 10 singers who walked off stage mid-concert.

1. Kanye West

The rapper is known for going off in public so this one is probably not a surprise. In 2013 he reportedly walked off stage while performing at Tampa Bay Times Forum (now the Amalie Arena). He was reportedly not happy with the technical aspects of the show, specifically the lasers and his microphone. After his third song started, he walked off stage because he wanted the lights off, according to The Huffington Post. He returned a minute later, and according to music critic Sean Daly, he yelled at his tech crew.

He then made headlines for stopping mid-concert again in 2016. He was performing in Inglewood when he stopped in a middle of a song. “Stop. Stop,” he said according to Yahoo. “I ain’t got no f***ing voice, I can’t do the show. Turn the lights on. I’ll get y’all a refund. I have no f***ing voice, I can’t do the f***ing show. Move the stage.”

The interruption happened 45 minutes into the show. “I’m very sorry, I love you” he added. He reportedly will have some time to rest before his next show, which will be November 17. Hopefully his voice will come back by then!

2. Cher Lloyd

If there was ever a good reason to storm off the stage, this is it! The British performer was on stage at the V Festival when someone in the crowd threw a water bottle full of urine at her. After walking off she later came back and said “It’s hard enough being up here,” she said according to Daily Mail, “but it’s not nice having bottles of p*ss chucked at you.” She later wrote about the incident on Twitter and said, “Thank you so much for all the nice messages, shame that a couple of people had to ruin it, unfortunately a glass bottle got thrown at me on stage.Tomorrow is another day,big love to my brats!!! Xx.”

3. Justin Bieber

In 2016, the pop star made headlines for stopping in the middle of his concert to scold his audience for talking over him. “I appreciate all the support,” he said according to E! “I appreciate love, I appreciate the kind things. But the screaming in these breaks has got to stop. Please and thank you. I don’t think it’s necessary when I’m trying to say something and you guys are screaming. I feel like I wanna connect with you.”

This didn’t help and the audience continued to scream. Bieber then reportedly dropped his microphone and walked off stage. After a few minutes he returned and said, “We’re just going to do the music. Obviously Manchester just can’t handle it, so let’s do the music.”

This has been an ongoing annoyance for the singer. The event happened after he tried getting another concert audience to quiet down earlier that week. In that instance he said, “I don’t mind cutting the bullsh*t because I don’t need to talk. I’m just trying to engage, but if you guys don’t want to do that then we can just play the music.”

4. Britney Spears

After three songs, the pop star left the stage while performing in Vancouver. So what went wrong? The building was smoky from the cigarette smoke coming from the crowd. She later returned to the stage and performed “Me Against the Music.” She continued performing a while before leaving again and later coming back before the night ended.

Her team later released a statement, “We want to apologize to all the fans who attended our Vancouver show tonight for the brief pause in Britney’s set. Crew members above the stage became ill due to a ventilation issue.”

5. Zayn Malik

When he was still in One Direction, Zayn ended up walking off stage while they were performing in Perth, Australia. However, the team’s spokesperson gave a good reason for this. “Zayn was taken ill during the show but it’s nothing serious,” their spokesperson said according to Metro. “Everyone is hoping he’ll be well enough for their next gig.” It later came out that he struggles with anxiety, and sometimes it affects his performances. In 2016 he ended up canceling a concert due to anxiety.

6. Selena Gomez

She’s not known for being a diva so this one might be more surprising. While performing at KIIS FM’s 2013 Jingle Ball concert she reportedly got upset about her audio and microphone malfunctioning. She ended up saying, “What the f*ck!” She then apologized to the crowd, “Sorry, the sound isn’t working!” she explained according to Fox New Latino. “Are you guys having a good night? I promise, a lot cooler people are gonna come out tonight. Is it OK if I perform two more songs and you guys can get to it? … I have to say that before you guys go on to the people that you care about, I really appreciate you supporting everything that I do.” However, she reportedly didn’t perform the final songs and ended up walking off the stage.

7. Billie Joe Armstrong

Green Day was on the set list to perform at iHeart Radio’s annual concert. However their time was reportedly going to get cut short to make room for Usher. The lead singer wasn’t happy about this and said “I’m going to play a f*cking new song,” according to Fuse. “F*ck this sh*t. Gimme a f*cking break. One minute left. One minute f*cking left. You’re going to give me one minute. I’ve been around since f*cking 198f*cking8.” He then reportedly cursed out Justin Bieber, smashed a guitar, and walked off stage. After the incident it was announced that Armstrong was going to rehab.

8. Madonna

In Santiago, Chile the performer spotted fans smoking in the crowd. She then stopped in the middle of “Human Nature” and went on a rant. “There are people smoking right now,” she said according to The Huffington Post. “No smoking. If you’re going to smoke cigarettes, I’m not doing a show. You don’t care about me, I don’t care about you. All right? Are we going to play that game? I’m not kidding. I can’t sing if you smoke … You’re looking right at me and smoking cigarettes, like I’m a stupid f*cking idiot.”

9. Axl Rose

The band has had a long history of having drama on stage. One of their more recent incidents happened in 2010 in Dublin. The band allegedly showed up to the concert almost an hour late. They were about to leave because so many fans had left the venue. However, they weren’t allowed to without finishing their set. While performing, the people that did stay started throwing things at them, and Rose responded to them.

“Here is the deal. One more bottle up here and we go. We don’t want to go. Your choice,” he said. However, another bottle was thrown and they walked off the stage with Rose saying, “OK, that’s it. Good night. Have a nice evening.”

10. Fiona Apple

The singer was performing at a party for Louis Vuitton in 2013. She then reportedly got angry that so many people in the crowd were talking, and even rang a small metal bell to get their attention. She then told the crowd to “Shut the f*ck up!” This didn’t work and she later said, “Predictable! Predictable fashion, what the f*ck?” before walking off.
