Sir Elton John: How Much is the Music Legend Worth?

Sir Elton John has been making music for over 50 years. He has written and co-written dozens of albums and soundtracks, is a multi-Grammy Award winner, and has established a nonprofit foundation in support of AIDS awareness and research. He also performed at Princess Diana’s funeral and made a special appearance at Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding.

Here are a few of Elton John’s greatest hits, how much the music legend is really worth, and who will portray him in the upcoming Rocketman biopic.

Elton John songs: His most popular music

Elton John is one of the most accomplished and well-known songwriters of his generation. While he has written and performed dozens of songs over the decades, there are probably a few you know a little better than the rest — maybe even still by heart.

“Rocket Man” — One of John’s greatest hits — popular enough to inspire the title of the upcoming movie based on his life — was inspired by Ray Bradbury’s short story “Rocket Man.” The first music video for the song was released in 2017.

“Tiny Dancer” — Originally released as a single in 1972, “Tiny Dancer” hit a second wave of popularity when it was featured in the movie Almost Famous (2000). An official music video for the song wasn’t released until 2017.

“Candle in the Wind” — Originally written as a tribute to Marilyn Monroe, the song experienced a surge in popularity — more so than in 1973 — after John rewrote and performed a different version in honor of Princess Diana in 1997. It became an instant hit when released as a single.

Elton John’s net worth

Celebrity Net Worth estimates Elton John is worth about $500 million. This is the result of decades’ worth of albums and hits.

The music he composed for Disney’s The Lion King (1994) was nominated for and won several Academy Awards, Golden Globes, and Grammy Awards. He was first nominated for a Grammy for “Best New Artist” in 1971.

While not every musician uses their fame and fortune for the greater good, Elton John dedicates large amounts of time and resources for the sake of charity. John has raised significant amounts of money for the AIDS Foundation and holds an annual fundraiser once a year.

He became involved with fundraising and awareness campaigns when he lost several friends to AIDS.

With the announcement and launch of Elton John’s farewell tour (Farewell Yellow Brick Road), it’s the perfect time to release a music-filled film depiction of his widely successful career — one that celebrates his accomplishments and has the potential to introduce younger audiences to his most classic hits.

A biopic based on John’s life is coming to theaters in 2019. The film will star Taron Egerton (Kingsman: The Secret Service) and will portray John’s rise to musical fame. It will also apparently touch on more personal aspects of his life, such as his experiences with drug addiction and falling in love.

While discussing the film, Egerton said: “I do feel the movie we shot is absolutely a celebration of everything that Elton John is and part of that is his sexuality … I actually think the gay community will be quite surprised by quite how gay it feels. I’ve loved every second of it.”

The movie will debut on May 31, 2019.
