Skylar Astin Says Fans Can Expect More Music on ‘Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist’ Season 2 (Exclusive)

Actor Skylar Astin from NBC’s Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist teased that fans can anticipate more musical numbers and surprising new combinations in the upcoming new season.

“I think [season 2] will potentially be more musical numbers,” he dished to Showbiz Cheat Sheet. “And some new combinations. And I really want to explore more duets or trios or mashup two people singing.”

“I think we’re really gonna play with the powers,” he continued. “Kind of like what we did in episode 8, where we kind of took it to a different degree. I think our show will always have the formula for how Zoey hears people’s innermost thoughts.”

Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist debuted midseason on NBC. The series follows a young computer programmer, Zoey, who begins hearing people’s thoughts through songs after a medical procedure goes awry. Astin plays Max, who is Zoey’s close friend but also a love interest.

Astin said creator Austin Winsberg plans to do a deeper dive into each character in season 2. “I know for a fact that Austin is going to focus a lot on our own individuality with these characters,” he said.

“And I know for a fact that the Max and Zoey stuff will be addressed. But there’s so much more story to tell,” Astin shared. “I think each actor, but also each character is such a well, a deep well of emotion and humor and backstory.

“And I know we’re going to focus on the series regulars that we were introduced to in season 1, both individually and how they interact with each other,” he said.

“So I think there might be some combinations of performers and actors that you maybe didn’t see in season 1,” he hinted. “Now that Max has lost his job, I actually don’t know if he’ll be back or when he’ll be back at SPRQPOINT [sparkpoint]. It takes him out of development and leaves him where he’ll be.”

“I have actually purposely asked Austin to keep me in the dark to some degree,” Astin added. “Although I do kind of know in a broad-strokes way what he’s hoping for as far as the soul of the show for season 2.”

‘Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist’ Season 2 starts shooting in a matter of weeks

Shooting on Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist Season 2 begins in a matter of weeks. “We’re leaving next week to go up to Vancouver,” Astin exclaimed. “We are one of the first productions to get started. I think that’s because Canada is doing pretty well over there and wants to make sure that we are not only healthy coming into the country, but we stay healthy.” He says production is following strict protocols and the government is quarantining the crew for two weeks.

Before he leaves, Astin plans support NBC’s annual Clear The Shelters pet adoption campaign. He will do a virtual reading of A Home for Hilly, an illustrated eBook created by Hill’s Pet Nutrition. Astin is a huge advocate for animal adoption, sharing that now is a great time to adopt a pet. “Everyone has the time to foster and adopt a pet,” he said. “You also foster that relationship.”

Astin also supports the partnership between Hill’s and Clear the Shelters. “I’ve always appreciated [Hill’s] dedication to keeping animals healthy,” he said. “For more than 18 years, they’ve supported shelter animals through their ‘Food, Shelter & Love’ program.”
