Nick Jonas was the reason for the Jonas Brothers breaking up in 2013

After four studio albums together, a television show on Disney Channel, and multiple concert tours, the youngest brother in the band revealed in 2019 that he was the catalyst for them breaking up. Leading up to the decision, Jonas thought that people weren’t as receptive to their music as they used to be.

“To call it creative differences is almost too simple, and I think a lot of people lost the appetite for what we were putting into the world,” Jonas said in an interview with CBS Sunday Morning in May 2019. “So, you know, we were putting up shows that weren’t selling. We were making music that I don’t think we were all super proud of, and it wasn’t connected.”

He addressed the situation with his brothers.

“I had a very tough conversation with them where I laid it out for them,” he revealed. “I said, ‘You know, I feel like the Jonas Brothers should be no more, and we should go on individual journeys.’ And it didn’t go so well.”

The band announced their official break up on Oct. 29, 2013.

Six years later, the Jonas Brothers announced that they would be returning as a band. They had all gone off and done their own journeys during the hiatus, with both Nick and Joe releasing solo music, and Kevin focusing on his wife and two daughters.

The band came back with a bang, releasing chart-topping singles “Sucker and “Cool,” as well as two documentaries for Amazon Prime Video: Chasing Happiness and Happiness Continues, the latter being a concert tour.

The Jonas Brothers even received their second Grammy Award nomination in 2020 for Pop Duo/Group Performance. Their first nomination was in 2009 for Best New Artist.

With the coronavirus pandemic affecting the world in 2020, the Jonas Brothers had to put their Las Vegas residency tour on hold, as well as a second album since returning after their hiatus.

But while fans have eagerly been awaiting for the next Jonas Brothers album, the youngest brother in the band stepped in to SNL to host and perform solo music. It made fans wonder if the band would be breaking up yet again.

Jonas addressed this question on many fans’ minds at the start of the show, in the SNL cold open.

He began the monologue by mentioning growing up in New Jersey. He then shouted out that Kevin, his older brother and bandmate, was in the audience. The camera panned to Kevin.

“Hey Nick, I am obviously so excited to be here and support you,” Kevin said from the audience. “Also, I gotta ask: Are we good? Cause I see you’re doing a lot of solo stuff. Are we still a band?”

“Of course,” Nick replied.

Kevin pressed further, joking: “Are you sure? Cause I just bought a house.”

The younger brother assured him: “The band is still together, I promise.”

For now, Jonas Brothers fans can rest easy and support the younger brother’s solo music. The band’s next album will likely come sometime soon, too.
