Sofia Richie Says ‘I Just Don’t Care What People Think’ About Her Relationship With Scott Disick
These days, Sofia Richie is more well-known for her relationship with Keeping Up with the Kardashians star Scott Disick than she is her work in modeling and fashion. And though she has a lot more going on, she’s addressing the concern around their age gap and high-profile status.
From her thoughts on the opinions of the masses to her friendships with other members of the Kardashian-Jenner family, Richie is opening up. She also speaks to how her famous father feels about her romantic relationship in a new interview.
Disick and Richie’s age gap has been a point of contention for many
Disick is, as most are aware, the ex-boyfriend of Kourtney Kardashian. The never married, but dated on and off from 2006 through 2015. Together, they have three children. In 2017, Disick began dating Richie, which was made even more public through the reality series.
Like Kardashian herself (at first), many viewers of the show have a problem with Disick dating someone so much younger than him. As of February 2020, Richie is 21, while Disick is 36, putting them about 15 years apart in age.
She doesn’t have an issue with it
Speaking with Cosmopolitan for the magazine’s April issue, Richie weighed in on the public opinions of her relationship. She told writer Kate Williams she has “this weird thing where I just don’t care what people think,” adding that the discourse “doesn’t bother me because I’m very happy.”
Richie also spoke about the oft-discussed friendship between her and Kardashian, as well as her long-time friend, Kylie Jenner. Of the former, she said, “There’s no reason not to be nice.” Of the latter, she relayed that the two have been friends for a long time (“since they were 14” writes Williams, as the two are just a year apart in age).
Richie’s famous father feels the same
A 15-year age gap may seem like something a father wouldn’t typically approve of. But Richie’s dad isn’t exactly ordinary, given that he’s renowned musician Lionel Richie. Not only is this kind of age difference fairly commonplace in show business, but the older Richie has some experience with it himself.
In the Cosmo article, the younger Richie called the age gap “great” (Williams’ words), and pointed to the one between her parents. Lionel Richie was first linked to her mother, Diane Alexander, in 1988, when he was 38 and she was 22, according to a People article from the time. (Cosmo writes that the age difference there is actually 18 years.) And Richie calls them “perfection.” (Lionel Richie and Diane Alexander divorced in 2003.)
She is working on her own ventures
Regardless of what you think of her personal life, Richie appears to be focused on moving forward professionally. She recently launched a collection of Rolla’s jeans. And she’s apparently pursuing a career in Hollywood.
So while she may still be “Scott Disick’s girlfriend” or “Lionel Richie’s daughter” to many, Richie is working to change that. “I want people to know that I have a lot of ambition to work hard,” she said in the Cosmo profile. “I want to be known for the great things that I do in my life.”
