Netflix’s ‘Someone Great’ Was Based On A True Story

Most of the greatest films have roots in reality. This was certainly the case for Someone Great, a romantic comedy that was really a celebration of female friendship. The flick, which premiered on Netflix in April 2019, was very well-received by fans and critics alike. Here’s a look at the movie, the writer/director, and how it relates to her real life.

What is Someone Great about?

A brief synopsis: Someone Great follows Jenny (Gina Rodriguez), a New York City resident who recently got her dream job with Rolling Stone and is moving to San Francisco. At the same time, she and her long-term boyfriend, Nate (Lakeith Stanfield) break up, rather than pursue long distance.

Like any love story, Someone Great flashes back to moments in their relationship, but the major storyline here is that, in order to help her move on and the ending of her time in NYC, Jenny’s friends Blair (Brittany Snow) and Erin (DeWanda Wise) decide to have one more crazy night out. It’s part one-night party film, part rom-com, and all about the real loves of our lives: Our friends.

It was written and directed by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson

Writer/director Jennifer Kayin Robinson was at the helm of the flick. Robinson is relatively new to show business. She has two acting credits from short films she appeared in several years ago, but it’s only been in the last few that she’s taken her talents behind the camera.

Prior to Someone Great, Robinson was the creator and head writer for the short-lived MTV series Sweet/Vicious. The show was about two women who become vigilantes after discovering the epidemic of sexual assault on their college campus. Sweet/Vicious was well-received by all, but sadly, was canceled after just one ten-episode season.

Here’s what she had to say about the real story

In Someone Great, the women attend a music festival. Then, on June 2, 2019, Robinson posted a photo of herself with two other women at The Governors Ball Music Festival in New York. Her caption reveals that she and the other two women, both named Jen, were the inspiration behind the story that plays out in the film. She writes:

“This is Jen and Jen. Nine years ago they took me to a dance party immediately after getting my heart broken. Someone Great isn’t about the dudes who [break your heart], it’s a love letter to all the best friends who look at you after and say, “do you want…molly?” I love them so much.”

Robinson has other things in common with Jenny

In addition to having two best friends help her get through heartbreak, Robinson took a lot of the character of Jenny from her own life. Aside from her name, Robinson was also a music journalist before coming to Hollywood. In fact, she spoke to the real Rolling Stone about one moment in particular that really happened.

When asked about a comment Jenny made in the film about how little she was paid for a particular gig, Robinson said, “That is real. In 2011, when I was writing for [music website] Pigeons and Planes, Pigeons hadn’t been bought by Complex yet and I legit, very real, got paid $20 a post.”
