Why Is Sophie Turner Paid So Much Less Than Kit Harington On ‘Game Of Thrones’?
After a two-year hiatus —the eighth and final season of Game of Thrones is finally set to begin in just a few short weeks. After all of these years, we will finally see if the White Walkers take over Westeros and who will end up sitting on the Iron Throne. (Honestly, at this rate we’re putting our bets on The Night King.)
Game of Thrones is one of the biggest shows ever to hit television –and it’s certainly the most expensive and expansive series HBO has ever done. As a result –the network has had to pay the Game of Thrones cast some big bucks. However, Kit Harington who plays Jon Snow still gets paid much more than Sophie Turner who plays Sansa Stark on the series, and now we know why.
Sophie Turner’s Game of Thrones salary and net worth
Sophie Turner has played Sansa Stark, the younger sister of Jon Snow on Game of Thrones since the show first premiered in 2011. We’ve watched Sansa’s grow from a bratty naive little girl to a badass woman who now has command of Winterfell in Jon’s absence.
Though Turner has had some massive storylines in the series over the years, she is still considered a B tier star on the show since her character isn’t as involved as some others. She is paid $150,000 per episode. Her co-star and best friend, Masie Williams, who plays Arya Stark is also paid the same. The sum certainly isn’t chump change. After all — according to Celebrity Net Worth, Turner is worth $6 million. However, she still isn’t being paid the same amount as some of her older co-stars.
Kit Harington’s Game of Thrones salary and net worth
Much of the past seven seasons of Game of Thrones have revolved around Kit Harington’s character Jon Snow including his lineage and his ascension into power. As a tier A star along with Emilia Clarke, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Peter Dinklage, and Lena Headey, Harington is paid $500,000-per-episode. According to Celebrity Net Worth, the King of the North is worth $12 million. But why is he paid so much more than Sophie Turner?
Why is Sophie Turner’s Game of Thrones salary so much less than Kit Harington’s?
An avid supporter of the Time’s Up Movement and gender equality –Sophie Turner has gotten candid about why she’s paid less than Kit Harrington and some of her other co-stars. She told Harper’s Bazaar UK that it’s “a little tricky” to demand equal pay on the hit HBO epic. She explained, “Kit got more money than me, but he had a bigger storyline. And for the last series, he had something crazy like 70-night shoots, and I didn’t have that many. I was like, ‘You know what… you keep that money.'” The Game of Thrones cast has been open about the “really miserable” night shoots for Season 8 that were shot over 11 weeks in freezing temperatures.
Still, Turner will always speak up and advocate for herself as she takes on new projects. She explained, “More willing to listen to people saying, ‘I want the same amount of money.’ So things are getting done, but it will take a while, I think… Now, you see women in the camera departments, producing, directing. It’s exciting.”
