Sophie Turner Reveals Her True Opinion on Sansa’s Ending in ‘Game of Thrones’

Game of Thrones may have come to an end nearly a week ago; however, the buzz – substantially consisting of widespread criticism – is still running rampant across the internet. While series finales are often divisive, the GoT ending has many fans pushing for a do-over. Whether disrespectful to those who have worked on the series or not, high ratings catalyze success, and fans control the ratings, so whose opinion matters the most?

Fans and critics alike argue that the narrative unfolded in the final season was abrupt, unfounded, or simply out of line with GoT trends. Bran Stark is King of Westeros – at Tyrion’s suggestion – and Sansa Stark was crowned Queen of the North.

Daenerys the “Mad Queen” was killed by her lover, in a medieval trope fashion, and Arya is headed west of Westeros. So, it’s as if everyone got to have their cake and eat it too, which is the very problem many folks have with the ending. Some feel it just didn’t fit with the series’ tone and was not properly founded.

During an interview with The New York Times, Sophie Turner discussed the Game of Thrones ending. Though acknowledging that you can never please everyone, she did explain to the Times that the behavior from fans has been “disrespectful,” before discussing her opinions regarding Sansa’s narrative conclusion.

Sophie Turner Talks Sansa Stark’s ending in ‘Game of Thrones’

After discussing the vitriolic response fans expressed to the finale, Sophie Turner explained how she felt about Sansa Stark’s conclusion specifically. The interviewer asked, “How did you feel about the way Sansa’s story ended?” Sophie Turner, content with the character’s arc, stated:

“I loved it. It’s the only place that she really, truly feels safe. It’s the place that she’s the most capable of ruling. She would be a fair and loving ruler, and it’s what she’s been striving for this whole series: to go back home, to protect her home. And finally she has that.”

Whether or not fans agree with Turner is a different story; however, it’s unlikely, even if the actress wasn’t a fan of the conclusion, that she would speak out against the series responsible for catalyzing her career.

Striving to protect her home for the entirety of Game of Thrones, Sansa Stark was yet another character whose ending was perfect, to say the least. She, along with many other GoT favorites, was awarded quite the happy ending.

Sophie Turner on the abuse Sansa suffered and the message GoT sends concerning abuse victims

Sophie Turner’s character on Game of Thrones has been called out for glamorizing abuse; meaning, the show, as the New York Times interviewer explains, seems to credit the abusers for making Sansa Stark the strong character she is. Commenting on this backward message, Turner stated:

“I obviously think that’s not a message to spread. But I don’t think that was the intention. It was that she was strong in spite of all of the horrific things that she’s gone through, not because of them. She’s had resilience since the very beginning, and despite all of these awful things that happened to her, she’s kept that resilience. Sansa to the core is resilient and brave and strong, and that had nothing to do with her abusers.”

The New York Times

Based on Turner’s explanation, it seems that she tried to defend the show and dismiss this idea. By focusing on the phrasing in spite of instead of because of, she separates the abuser from the abused as a catalyst for strength. However, many would argue that Sansa’s resilience was developed in a cause & effect fashion with her abuse on the series. Either way, it’s clear that Turner supports Sansa’s narrative from start to finish, including her grand – or, not so grand – finale.
