Sorry, Marvel! Keanu Reeves Is Reportedly In Talks To Join Another Major Franchise
It’s no secret that Marvel has been wooing Keanu Reeves for a major role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) for years, but the studio may have just missed the boat on that front. Reeves’ career has witnessed a major resurgence in recent times and the actor is preparing to reboot some of his most popular franchises in Bill & Ted and The Matrix. While Marvel would love to add Reeves to the MCU, he is reportedly looking to join another big franchise in the near future.
Where is Keanu Reeves headed?
There is no doubt that adding Reeves to the MCU would be a major win for Marvel. Heck, any major franchise would benefit from adding someone like Reeves (which is why he’s a hot commodity in Hollywood).
While Marvel president Kevin Feige has pushed hard to land Reeves, the actor might be eyeing a completely different role.
According to We Got This Covered, the Matrix star has been talking with writer Chris Morgan about joining the popular Fast & Furious franchise. Morgan originally wrote a part for Reeves in Hobbs & Shaw, but the actor was unable to make it because of a scheduling conflict.
Reeves was supposed to play the part of the leader of Eteon. With Keanu Reeves unable to appear, the movie featured the villain as a disembodied voice, opening the door for the John Wick star to return in the next film.
It is possible that Reeves will appear in a future Fast & Furious film as well, though nothing official has been confirmed.
In a recent interview, Morgan confirmed that he has been in meetings with Reeves about bringing him into the fold. But the biggest hurdle is getting the scheduling right, a battle Marvel has been fighting for years.
“I sat down with [Keanu Reeves] and we’re talking about. I wanted him to be in the Fast universe for a very long time. We’re just trying to find… the hardest thing is always time and competing schedules and then designing the right thing together. My fervent desire is to bring him into this franchise for sure,” Morgan shared.
Marvel opens up about landing Reeves
While Reeves looks to ink a deal with Fast & Furious, Feige recently opened up about his efforts to land the Bill & Ted star. Feige revealed that he talks to Reeves whenever a new project in the MCU comes up but they have never been able to find the right role for him to cover.
The studio had a similar problem with Jake Gyllenhaal, who ended up appearing in Spider-Man: Far From Home as Mysterio. Prior to that role, however, Gyllenhaal had been considered for a part since 2003, when Marvel thought about casting him as Spider-Man.
Before Feige’s interview, there were rumors that Marvel wanted to introduce Reeves in The Eternals. Those plans, however, never materialized.
Instead, Marvel tapped Angelina Jolie, Kit Harington, Richard Madden, and Kumail Nanjiani to star in the film.
What’s next for Keanu Reeves?
Following a busy 2019 that saw Reeves appear in four movies – John Wick: Chapter 4 – Parabellum, Toy Story 4, Always Be My Maybe, and Between Two Ferns: The Movie – the actor is working on a slew of new projects for 2020 and 2021.
This includes a new Bill & Ted film and another edition of the Matrix.
The Matrix 4 has officially been confirmed and filming for the project could start as soon as 2020. Warner Bros. has not revealed too many details about the movie, though it is expected to pick up after the events in the third film. While Reeves’ character was killed off at the end of the trilogy, he will be reprising his role as Neo.
We have no idea how the writers are bringing Neo back to life, but fans are definitely stoked to see him return to action.
As far as the other original cast members are concerned, we know that Carrie-Anne Moss will be coming back as Trinity. Like Neo, Trinity was killed off in the original trilogy, so there’s no telling how they are bringing her back.
The film will also feature some new additions to star alongside Keanu Reeves, including Neil Patrick Harris and Jessica Henwick. We don’t have any details regarding their characters, but rumor has it that Henwick is being eyed for a big role.
Warner Bros. has not revealed a premiere date for The Matrix 4.
