‘Spencer’ Star Kristen Stewart Says What Happened to Princess Diana Is ‘One of the Saddest Stories to Exist Ever’
Kristen Stewart has been cast in the upcoming biopic about Princess Diana titled Spencer. The Twilight actor has been vocal about the coaching she received and the research she did on the princess for the Pablo Larraín-directed film.
Here’s more on that and what Stewart has said about playing the woman with “one of the saddest stories to exist ever.”
What is ‘Spencer’ about?
Spencer will take place over three days during Christmas at Sandringham in which Princess Diana makes the decision to separate from her husband, Prince Charles.
“We decided to get into a story about identity, and around how a woman decides somehow, not to be the queen,” Larraín told Deadline.”She’s a woman who, in the journey of the movie, decides and realizes that she wants to be the woman she was before she met Charles.”
In a statement (per Sky News) Stewart explained: “Spencer is a dive inside an emotional imagining of who Diana was at a pivotal turning point in her life. It is a physical assertion of the sum of her parts, which starts with her given name; Spencer. It is a harrowing effort for her to return to herself, as Diana strives to hold onto what the name Spencer means to her.”
Stewart calls Princess Diana’s story ‘one of the saddest’
During an interview with InStyle in October 2020, Stewart revealed the most intimidating thing about playing the late princess and how tragic Diana’s story is.
“The accent is intimidating as all hell,” she admitted. “People know that voice, and it’s so, so distinct and particular. I’m working on it now and already have my dialect coach. In terms of research, I’ve gotten through two and a half biographies… It’s one of the saddest stories to exist ever, and I don’t want to just play Diana — I want to know her implicitly.”
Stewart also explained why she feels a bit protective of Princess Diana now.
“It’s hard not to feel protective over her,” the Snow White and the Huntsman star said on Jimmy Kimmel Live! “She was so young… everyone’s perspective is different, and there’s no way to get everything right… what is fact in relation to personal experience.”
Princess Diana’s death and her last words
On Aug. 30, 1997, Princess Diana and her companion Dodi Fayed dined at the Ritz Hotel in Paris around 10 p.m. Just after midnight, the pair left the Imperial Suite and headed to Fayed’s apartment. They exited the rear of the building in an attempt to escape the paparazzi but to no avail.
They were chased by photogs as they drove off in a Mercedes S-280 limousine that was driven by Ritz security head Henri Paul. The vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed and crashed into a pillar in the Pont de l’Alma tunnel. Paul and Fayed were killed instantly but the princess was still alive.
Xavier Gourmelon was one of the firefighters who responded to crash and pulled the Princess of Wales from the wreckage. He recalled to The Sun the final words the princess was heard speaking. “Diana said to me, ‘My God, what’s happened?’” Gourmelon remembered.
The princess was suffering from internal injuries including a severed pulmonary vein and was transported to the La Pitie Salpetriere Hospital. Doctors worked to save her life but she was pronounced dead hours later on Aug. 31, 1997.
Spencer is set to be released later this year.
