Avengers: Infinity War is still making money at the box office. The Marvel blockbuster was the first part of the culmination of 10 years of movies, and by and large, the fans loved it. Next on the docket for the Marvel Cinematic Universe is Ant-Man and the Wasp, then Captain Marvel, and then finally Avengers 4 next spring.
But not long after Avengers 4 comes out, a sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming is scheduled to release. The currently untitled Spider-Man 2 doesn’t have a whole lot of confirmed details, but one Reddit user claims to have a whole lot of insider knowledge about the production. That includes one major spoiler for Avengers 4 (page 5).
Let’s take a look at those rumors, plus other things we know. Spoilers for Infinity War are ahead!
Michael Keaton will return as Vulture
- The bad guy from Homecoming is back again.
It was teased at the very end of Homecoming, but Michael Keaton will return in Spider-Man 2 as Vulture. Although we don’t know for sure, Michael Mando seems obvious to return as Scorpion as well. The Better Call Saul actor had very little screen time in Homecoming, but the post-credit scene with Keaton in prison seemed to hint at something for the future.
Given the leaks on Reddit, whatever role the characters play might be small. Apparently, Peter Parker is going to spend a significant amount of time overseas. But we do know for sure that Keaton will return, at the very least with a cameo.
Next: A rumored bad guy
Jake Gyllenhaal as Mysterio
- Lots of rumors about this actor joining the cast.
This rumor is that actor Jake Gyllenhaal will play the primary villain in the movie, Mysterio. If true, it’ll be fun when people in theaters all over the country start wondering why the new Spider-Man movies cast the original Spider-Man from the Sam Raimi movies. But no, that wasn’t Gyllenhaal, that was his look-alike Tobey Maguire.
Interestingly, Gyllenhaal did almost get to play Spider-Man in that series. Maguire injured his back while shooting Seabiscuit, and nearly wasn’t able to pick up with 2004’s Spider-Man 2. Gyllenhaal, the Maguire look-a-like, was Raimi’s backup plan if his star had to drop out. It seems like Gyllenhaal will finally be getting into a Spider-Man movie, 14 years later.
Next: The leaked title and plot
The rumored title and plot
- This is what the Reddit user says the movie will be about.
According to AHarbingerOfStuff on Reddit, the plot of Spider-Man 2 is that Peter Parker and his schoolmates go on a Stark Industries sponsored field trip to London. It’s there that Parker encounters Mysterio, who is an international thief charged with stealing a creation of Stark’s for a currently unknown employer. The title of the movie is rumored to be Spider-Man: Field Trip.
The mystery employer of Mysterio is said to be a major villain from the comics, and one that could be prominent in future Spider-Man movies. Although the Redditor says that Marvel is still working through a list of A-list actors for casting, many have wondered if the MCU would finally create a lifeline to the Netflix series and bring in Vincent D’Onofrio as Wilson Fisk (Daredevil).
Next: Other characters that will return
Peter Parker and others will return
- Most of the main cast from the first movie will be back.
Many fans will have questions about how Peter Parker will return, given that we saw him disintegrate into a pile of ash at the end of Infinity War. That remains to be seen, but given the status of Spider-Man 2 and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 — which would feature just Rocket and Nebula, at this point — we’re going to guess that at least some of those characters return in Avengers 4.
Among the characters rumored to reappear via the Reddit plot leak are Aunt May, Ned, Liz, and a cameo by Gwyneth Paltrow’s Pepper Potts. Aunt May and Ned seem like obvious choices to bring back, but given that Liz had moved out to Oregon with her mother at the end of Homecoming it’s curious how they’ll work her back into the plot.
Next: About that Avengers 4 spoiler …
Tony Stark has apparently died
- One character may not make an appearance, and it’s a big one.
The big spoiler from AHarbingerOfStuff’s Reddit post, assuming we can take it at face value, is that Tony Stark is dead. Here is exactly what the post says on the topic, which is fairly vague.
Set after AVENGERS 4. Peter is revived, and it appears Tony Stark will indeed die and Peter will be mourning his death. The plot revolved around something groundbreaking that Stark has created, and which is stolen and Spider-Man must retrieve.
No details are given as to how Stark dies in Avengers 4, but it’s believable. Many believe that everything that has happened in the entire MCU to this point has been leading to Stark’s death, including his own visions of the future.
Next: Can we believe this Redditor?
The leak may not be credible
- Don’t believe everything that you read.
This is somewhat obvious, but there is no reason to believe that this person on Reddit is telling the truth. The post simply claims a reliable source handing them plot details for Spider-Man 2, but has no credentials to back this up. To go even further, this Reddit user has no history of correctly hitting plot points for previous Marvel movies. The post he or she made on Spider-Man 2 is the first under this username.
So if you’re regretting having found your way to the reveal that Iron Man won’t make it out of Avengers 4 alive, there is still hope. There is nothing revealed in the Reddit post that couldn’t have easily been made up in the active imagination of any Marvel fan.
Next: Why we may want it to be fake
Should we want the leak to be credible?
- Marvel can’t risk confirming any amount of truth in this leak.
If the leak is credible, Marvel is kind of painted into a corner here. Since the Reddit user gave even the planned title of the movie, which won’t enter theaters until July 2019, those in charge would have to seriously consider changing it. If Marvel reveals months from now that the title is indeed Spider-Man: Field Trip, they would essentially be admitting that some insider knowledge was leaked.
For this reason, and all the other complications with having the plot of this movie get out, we should all hope that this is just some Reddit user yanking our chain. It’s perfectly fine if Marvel plans to kill off Tony Stark in a blaze of glory at the end of Avengers 4, but we deserve to see it play out as intended. Not as part of some early Spider-Man 2 plot leak.
