Spider-Man Could Be the Key to Everything Marvel Studios Has Planned for Phase 4 of the MCU

Spider-Man is widely considered the most popular superhero in all of Marvel Comics. And Sony — which co-owns the character’s movie rights — is busy building its own shared universe centered on the webhead. In addition to the burgeoning franchise, Tom Holland’s Spider-Man looks like he’ll be a key figure in Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Sony is looking to strengthen its ties to the MCU

Spider-Man: Far From Home reintroduced fans to a familiar face. During a mid-credits scene, J.K. Simmons’ reprised the role of J. Jonah Jameson. But Simmons’ casting looks like it isn’t just another bit of fan service. Rather, it could reveal a lot about the MCU’s future.

Simmons has confirmed he’s due to reappear soon. And fans speculate he’ll pop up in either Venom: Let There Be Carnage or Morbius. Both projects serve as spin-offs of the Spider-Man mythos. And Simmons’ appearance will strengthen the connection between the MCU and Sony’s Marvel movies.

Some fans even expect Holland’s Spider-Man to make a cameo. With the X-Men not expected to make their MCU debut until at least Phase 5, it stands to reason Marvel and Sony would tighten their bond in Phase 4. Perhaps such a move was stipulated in their latest contract negotiation in 2019.

A live-action Spider-Verse movie might happen

Sam Raimi took Spider-Man to the big screen for the first time in 2002. And he helped shape modern superhero movies in its two sequels. So it feels like a strange coincidence that Raimi is returning to Marvel just as Spidey’s MCU role intensifies. Or is this too by design?

Raimi will direct Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. And fans expect that movie — as its title suggests — will kick the door wide open for the Marvel multiverse. With two previous live-action incarnations of Spider-Man before Holland, is a live-action Spider-Verse film coming soon?

2018’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse has already prepared audiences for a world where multiple Spider-Man characters unite. So it seems more likely than ever Holland could unite with Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield at some point down the line, perhaps to take on the Sinister Six.

Spider-Man could be the leader of the Young Avengers

So many heroes from the original Avengers line-up have already exited. And with many more heroes on the way, rumors are heavily hinting at more than one team of superheroes forming in the years ahead. If that’s the case, Spider-Man seems ideally suited to lead the Young Avengers.

After all, Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel is already the favorite to take over the main Avengers team. But Holland’s Spider-Man could lead other teen heroes like Shuri (Letitia Wright) and Kate Bishop. The MCU Phase 4 is definitely heading for a big change. Putting Spider-Man — again, Marvel’s biggest star — front and center is a no-brainer.
