‘Spider-Man: Far From Home’ Fan Theory: Will Robert Downey Jr. Return?

Could Robert Downey Jr. make an appearance in Spider-Man: Far From Home? Some fans are jumping on a theory that perhaps Tony Stark/Iron Man will be in the newest installment of Spider-Man, at least in some small way.

Why fans think Tony Stark will be in Spider-Man: Far From Home

According to a Reddit entry under Spider-Man: Far From Home Spoilers, a Marvel fan points out a “potential big thing from the new Spider-Man: Far From Home trailer.” The fan thinks that, based on a trailer for the film, due in theaters on July 2, there’s a possible way for Iron Man/Tony Stark to return.

The Reddit user poses the idea that in the trailer, there’s evidence that Tony Stark might appear, based on a moment where Peter Parer interacts with tech that appears to have been designed by Stark. The voice from the tech, however, doesn’t use any of the voices many would assume — Vision, F.R.I.D.A.Y., or Karen.

The fan thinks that the voice heard in the trailer could be a placeholder and that in the actual film, we’ll hear Stark as Peter’s A.I. guide.

The Reddit user explains: “In the new Far From Home trailer that I will link below, Peter puts on a pair of Tony’s iconic glasses and an AI talks to him, asking if ‘you would like to see what I can do’ and then a bunch of intel pops up on screen over the world.”

They continue, sharing this theory:

“The part I am questioning is that the AI has an oddly artificial voice. It’s quite a digital voice, that would fit in our world as a potential AI voice, but in the MCU AI’s are far more human. Look at J.A.R.V.I.S., F.R.I.D.A.Y., and Karen. They are all just real voice actors. Cut to Tony’s AI for Peter in Far From Home and it feels odd.

I think it has been manipulated for trailer purposes, to hide the real voice of Tony’s glasses AI. The obvious choice is that Tony himself will be the AI, which is a comic moment, and would be incredible, though unfeasible with Robert Downey Jr serving his time in the MCU.”

The Reddit user further notes: “Another option, based on the fact that this trailer is a Chinese release, and not western, is that the AI voice is a specific thing for their region, and that in the UK, and North America, the AI will have Karen’s voice, or another realistic voice actor. I know plenty of odd changes get made for films in regard to regional preferences.”

In closing, the user asks, “What do you guys think? I just cannot imagine why they would have such an odd AI voice for these glasses when previous films establish such realistic AI voices. TL;DR – The AI voice in this trailer sounds odd. It could be a trailer cover-up for the real voice. The real voice could potentially, though unrealistically, be Tony.”

Fans weigh in on the theory

While it’s certainly plausible, not everyone who commented on the Reddit post agreed that it was likely. One commenter noted: “Doubt it because I think they really want his death to feel impactful and make it feel like he really is gone.”

Another user agreed, noting: “I don’t think it will be Tony… but I think it will be FRIDAY or even Karen again. I think they just wanted to keep that secret because it would create further spoilers, IE the possibility of a hologram RDJ cameo. I know it’s not the most likely scenario but I really do think it’s something we may end up seeing. The movie is being marketed VERY heavily as taking place in a Post-Avengers world that is grieving the loss of Tony Stark, so I wouldn’t be surprised if he does turn up even if it’s brief.”

There were plenty fans holding out a bit of hope, however, with one person writing: “I had the exact same thought, this sounds nothing like Tony’s AI’s, but i didnt consider this. I love it and i honestly really hope it turns out to be Tony’s voice.”
