‘Star Trek: Discovery’: Will Saru and Burnham’s Desire to Be Captain Lead to a Battle in Season 3?
The crew members of USS Discovery is going to have a long road ahead of them in season 3 of Star Trek: Discovery. There is also a question of who will lead them through it and how. Will Saru (Doug Jones) and Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green)’s desire to be captain lead to a battle?
Showbiz Cheat Sheet talked to Jones at PaleyFest on Oct. 5. This is his answer to that question and what he had to say about their journey.
Saru is acting captain in the beginning of season 3
There are a lot of questions going into the third season. One that has been answered is who is acting as captain at the beginning of the new season.
“We leave with me in the captain chair as acting captain,” Jones told Showbiz Cheat Sheet. “I still have commander’s rank and status. But I can do that now with a bit more confidence because I’m not afraid of what’s around the corner at every corner.”
This is because the character’s threat ganglia fell off. “Fear was just what would govern me,” said the actor. “And I had overcome it at every moment that I lived. Whereas now it’s like he’s got the freedom to lead with a bit of courage.”
Saru will be focused on protecting those on USS Discovery
The captain is going to have a tough job this season. That’s because USS Discovery traveled 930 years into the future.
“There are emotional and mental challenges that we have to face because we all have something dear behind,” said Jones. “We’re all experiencing a new world that we don’t understand yet. So that could mess with anybody’s psyche, couldn’t it?”
The actor said Saru tells them to cling to their ideals. He continued, “So we have each other and I keep reminding us that we do have each other.” He added, that this “give us a nice rock solid base to jump to the future from.”
Both he and Michael Burnham want the chair
It’s unknown how long Saru will be acting captain. There was another character who wanted the position last season.
“It’s not decided who’s going to take the captain’s chair permanently yet because Burnham and Saru kind of wink and nod at each other to say like ‘We’ll talk about this later. Let’s get through this moment first.’ So who gets the Captain’s chair?” asked Jones.
Does this mean there is a threat to their close relationship? Jones seems hopeful that it’ll all work out.
“I don’t anticipate a battle,” answered Jones. “I anticipate because I think that Burnham and Saru want the chair for themselves because that’s what they’ve all been, we’ve been, climbing through Starfleet to attain. But we also respect each other so much and that they became truer even more in season two.”
Fans will have to wait and see how the characters will deal with this new world together. The third season of Star Trek: Discovery will premiere in 2020.
