”Star Wars’: Andy Serkis Confirms Leader Snoke’s Mysterious Past Will Be Revealed

Star Wars: The Force Awakens was positively received by fans and had many of them wanting more. One of the questions the sequel left fans with was about the background of a new character, Supreme Leader Lord Snoke. We see the leader talk to Kylo Ren and encourage him to do what his grandfather, Darth Vader, couldn’t for the Empire.

But that quick scene didn’t reveal who this villain really is. What does he want other than the rise and complete rule by the Empire? Where did he come from? What does he actually look like in person? A lot of these answers won’t come until much later, but director J.J. Abrams and actor Andy Serkis have revealed some more hints along the way.

Here are seven things we know about the mysterious leader’s backstory and more.

1. Supreme Leader Lord Snoke’s backstory has been created

When asked if he knows about Snoke’s backstory, Andy Serkis told IGN, “Oh yeah, absolutely I know it.” So chances are the future movies will reveal where Leader Snoke came from and how he rose to power. The actor didn’t dive into specifics, but he did talk about the physical aspects of his character and what they say about his history.

“He’s got this cleft in his head,” said Serkis. “And I think it’s very painful for him to speak and yet there’s an imperiousness about him. He’s severely damaged but there’s a vulnerability that’s he’s trying to cover so that was sort of what I was trying to do.”

2. Supreme Leader Lord Snoke won’t meet Leia Organa in Star Wars: The Last Jedi

This isn’t the first time the voice actor has talked about his character and the future Star Wars movies. He previously revealed that Leia doesn’t meet Snoke in Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

I had no scenes with Carrie [Fisher] but I did get to know her a little bit,” he said. “She was an incredible human being with a wonderful personality and she’s sadly, sadly missed, and everyone who came into contact with her was really touched by her great energy and great sense of humour.”

3. Serkis also said Snoke is a totally new character

A lot of people came up with theories suggesting Snoke is someone we already know, but the actor actually said this isn’t true.

“No, he’s a new character in this universe. It is very much a newly introduced character,” Serkis said, according to Entertainment Weekly. “He’s aware of what’s gone on, in the respect that he has been around and is aware of prior events. I think it’d be fair to say that he is aware of the past to a great degree.”

4. J. J. Abrams says Snoke isn’t a Sith Lord

One of the theories people jumped to was that the leader is a Sith Lord. But the director kind of tore that theory apart.

Kylo Ren is not a Sith,” he told Empire. “He works under Supreme Leader Snoke, who is a powerful figure on the dark side of the Force.

5. The character believes Darth Vader’s emotions led to the Empire’s downfall

We saw in The Force Awakens a little bit of the mysterious character’s perspective on how to win this war. Smoke tells Kylo Ren, “It was neither poor strategy nor arrogance that brought down the Empire. You know too well what did.” Kylo Ren offers that “sentiment” is what brought it down.

The leader responded, “Yes. Had Lord Vader not succumbed to emotion at the crucial moment — had the father killed the son — the Empire would have prevailed. And there would be no threat of Skywalker’s return today.”

This opinion is what led to many theories suggesting the books are hinting a certain character is Snoke.

6. The Operator in Aftermath could be Snoke

In the book Aftermath, there is a character called the Operator, who also voiced opinions on what makes the Empire inefficient. The character said, according to Movie Pilot:

The Empire became this…ugly, inelegant machine. Crude and inefficient. We needed to be broken into pieces. We needed to get rid of those who want to see that old machine churning ineluctably forward. It’s time for something better. Something new. An Empire worthy of the galaxy it will rule.

A character working for the Empire who also is open to criticizing it — that does sound familiar!

7. There are many theories the character is actually a character that already exists

Serkis pretty much poked holes in all of these theories, but it’s still good to mention that a lot of fans think Snoke is someone we already know. Some of the rumored characters are from prequels, like Jar Jar Binks and Mace Windu.

But other theories tie the mysterious character to the originals, like a clone of Darth Vader.
