‘Star Wars’: John Boyega Weighs in on Whether Anakin or Rey Is More Powerful

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker will arrive in theaters in just a few weeks. That means fans are inching ever closer to finding out how the story of Anakin Skywalker and his legacy truly ends. The film has a lot riding on it, especially since it will be the last hurrah for many longtime characters.

But anticipation for The Rise of Skywalker hasn’t stopped fans from engaging in some good old-fashioned debate. The saga, of course, centers on the “mystical energy field” — Han’s words, not ours — known as the Force. So fans have once again been trying to determine the most powerful Star Wars character.

The ongoing power struggle of ‘Star Wars’

The saga as a whole places a lot of emphasis on power. Sith Lords like Darth Sidious and Darth Vader are constantly endorsing the “power of the dark side.” And the Jedi too discuss the balance of power, with Obi-Wan notably warning Vader that he would become “more powerful than [he] can possibly imagine.”

From the original trilogy to the current sequels, the Star Wars universe revolves around power in all its forms. This could be of a political nature or a testament to one’s combat skills. But most often, it can be attributed to a Force user’s knowledge and ability to tap into the Force.

By this definition, identifying the “most powerful” Force user in the saga is a bit difficult to nail down. Ultimately, everyone is entitled to his or her own opinion. However, someone with more hands-on experience with the saga has thrown his thoughts out on the subject.

John Boyega weighs in on the most powerful Force user

Comic Book Resources recently claimed that a new prequel comic to The Rise of Skywalker positions Rey as a more powerful Jedi than either Luke or Anakin Skywalker. Based on her innate abilities and instincts, Rey proves herself a more capable Jedi than the leads in the previous trilogies. However, Boyega simply isn’t buying it.

Anakin is, after all, the “chosen one” that was destined to bring balance to the Force. So Boyega may be speaking to that fact. Even as Darth Vader, Anakin is able to overcome his near-death experience to eventually tear apart a ship full of Rebels in Rogue One. To Boyega’s point, Anakin’s potential is seemingly limitless.

Will Rey and Anakin cross paths in ‘The Rise of Skywalker’?

As for Rey, she will likely be on a completely different level when we meet her again in The Rise of Skywalker. The film will jump ahead a year, presumably during which time Rey will have been training. Remember, she does have an epic showdown with Kylo Ren to get ready for.

As for the Rey versus Anakin debate, fans may never see the two Jedi go head to head. But that doesn’t mean they won’t get a chance to meet. Rumors have been swirling that Hayden Christensen will reprise the role of Anakin in The Rise of Skywalker.

If Anakin’s Force ghost shows up in the film, his appearance will more likely be tied to Kylo Ren’s story. Yet, there is still the off-chance that Anakin might appear alongside Luke to counsel Rey for a battle against Palpatine. No one knows the former emperor better than the Skywalkers. So Rey may need their insight to emerge victorious before it’s all over.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker hits theaters on December 20. Tickets are on sale now.
