Joseph Gordon-Levitt has a cameo in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, the film’s director has revealed.
Rian Johnson recently answered some questions about The Last Jedi at an event in Japan, and when he was asked to reveal something about the film that was not previously known, he said that he gave his friend Joseph Gordon-Levitt a cameo in the movie.
“You know what I can tell you – and we haven’t said this yet, but I think this is okay to say – is that my very good friend, the actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who was in a movie I made called Looper, he does a cameo as a voice of an alien in the film,” Johnson said. “So it’s a very brief, little thing, but it’s fun, and if you watch the movie, maybe you’ll be able to hear and pick out Joe’s voice in the movie.”
So far, Joseph Gordon-Levitt has appeared in every movie Rian Johnson has made. Johnson’s directorial debut was Brick, a 2005 neo-noir film starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt in the lead role. Then, Johnson made a film about con men called The Brothers Bloom, and although Gordon-Levitt did not play a character in it, he was given a brief cameo as a bar patron. Johnson’s third film was Looper, which again starred Gordon-Levitt in the lead role as a time traveler who must kill his future self. And now Johnson’s fourth film is Star Wars: The Last Jedi, where Gordon-Levitt will show up via voice as an alien.
When Rian Johnson was hired as the director of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Joseph Gordon-Levitt said that he really wanted to be in the film. He told CinemaBlend, “I knock on his door every day, and I’m like, ‘Am I in the movie yet? Am I in the movie yet? Dude! No, seriously dude. It’s important to me! I want to be in the movie!’ We’ll see.”
Star Wars: The Force Awakens had plenty of fun cameos like this, many of which are from actors who don’t appear on screen or who are hidden away under a costume. Most famously, Daniel Craig plays the Stormtrooper who Rey performs a Jedi mind trick on in order to free herself from captivity. Simon Pegg also plays Unkar Plutt, the junkyard dealer who is in possession of the Millennium Falcon on Jakku. Plus, Bill Hader provided some sounds that were used to create BB-8.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi has already been confirmed to have a number of cameos. Prince Harry and Prince William apparently show up in the film, as does Tom Hardy, according to John Boyega. Joseph Gordon-Levitt is the latest actor who has been revealed to have a cameo in the film, though there are likely many more that we won’t learn about until closer to the movie’s release on December 15.
