‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’ New Video Teases First Meeting Between Rey and Poe

A new behind-the-scenes video from the set of Star Wars: The Last Jedi has just been released, and it teases the first scene in which Rey and Poe Dameron interact.

This video was released on Tuesday via The USA Today, and it’s mainly focused on director Rian Johnson’s experience shooting the upcoming film. However, in it we also get a few revealing shots that will be of interest to fans, particularly this one of Rey and Poe together in what appears to be the Millennium Falcon.

Based on what we’ve seen from The Last Jedi so far, it seems likely that this scene happens sometime near the end of the movie, after the sequence of Rey and Snoke in Snoke’s throne room and after the Battle of Crait. Previous footage has confirmed that both Rey and Poe wind up on Crait, the red and white planet featured prominently on the movie’s poster. It’s possible Rey and Poe interacting before the battle, though. Certainly Rey and Poe will not meet until at least an hour into the movie, as The Last Jedi opens with Rey spending time training with Luke Skywalker. Poe, meanwhile, seems to have a separate storyline that intertwines with Leia Organa’s and won’t have him crossing paths with Rey until near the end.

Surprisingly, even though the three main characters of the new Star Wars trilogy are Rey, Finn and Poe, Rey and Poe have actually never met on screen before. They were in the same place at the end of The Force Awakens when they were both at the Resistance base on D’Qar, but never did they interact, and Rey was only there for a brief time before leaving to find Luke Skywalker.

At least, that’s the case in the movies. In the novelization of The Force Awakens, Rey and Poe actually do briefly meet. Poe introduces himself, and Rey says, “I recognize the name. So you’re Poe. Poe Dameron, the X-wing pilot. I’m Rey.” Poe smiles at her and says, “I know. Nice to meet you.” The novelizations are considered canon, but it remains to be seen whether The Last Jedi will reintroduce Rey and Poe in the scene teased today or allow viewers to assume that they were introduced off screen.

There are a few other interesting tidbits in this new video, including the fact that Rey is seen holding her staff in the rain, seeming to confirm that when Luke Skywalker says “This is not going to go the way you think” in the trailer, he’s talking to Rey. The video also shows DJ, the character played by Benicio Del Toro, on the undercover mission with Finn and Rose, which is our first indication that he joins them in the adventure.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi opens in theaters on Dec. 15.
