‘Star Wars’ Signals: A Special Look Inside the Costumes of ‘Rogue One
Welcome to our weekly Star Wars roundup! With Disney ramping up the franchise on all cylinders, there’s tons of exciting stuff in the way of news, rumors, and clips. We’ve picked out the best Star Wars stories the internet has to offer, bringing you everything you need to know about the world’s favorite sci-fi series.
1. Gillette’s top secret Rogue One event in London gives us an exclusive look at the film’s costumes
We were recently lucky enough to score an invite to Gillette’s Rogue One event in London, where we went inside the famed Pinewood Studios to take a peek at costumes for each of the film’s main characters. Over the course of the night, we got a chance to chat with Star Wars visual effects wizard Neal Scanlan (billed as “the father of BB-8”), get up close and personal with Rogue One‘s many new faces, and get an exclusive first look at Gillette’s tie-in ad campaign.
In terms of Rogue One‘s costumes, each one was on display alongside a descriptive character card, running down each character’s background in-depth. We learned a handful of intriguing facts, including that Bodhi Rook (Riz Ahmed) was a former Imperial pilot defected to the Rebellion, Imperial Death Troopers were used as Director Krennic’s personal bodyguards, and lots more. You can read our full summary of the night’s festivities here.
2. Battlefront 2 is set for a fall 2017 release
Disney’s Star Wars revival has been thorough to say the very least. As part of that all-out franchise blitz, the studio tasked EA Games and DICE with creating the first new Battlefront video game in a decade. What we got in 2015 was a half-formed shadow of the game that many had grown up playing.
That being so, Battlefront has steadily added exciting content to the mix, coming in the form of a handful of expansions taking players to Bespin, the Outer Rim, and most recently, the Death Star. Next up for EA will be a sequel rumored to feature characters from the new trilogy. EA CFO Blake Jorgensen even gave us a rough idea of when it’ll release, setting a tentative date of “a year from now” on an investor call.
3. The Force Awakens commentary reveals history (or lack thereof) between Rey and Kylo Ren
Many of the prominent Rey-related theories believe that she was a former student of Luke Skywalker’s, and that she and Kylo Ren have a history that dates back to those days. Commentary from director J.J. Abrams on a special release Blu-Ray though, seems to refute that. Abrams talks about how “one of the new relationships that we were focusing on was between Kylo Ren and Rey,” going on to note how, “they’ve never met but (Kylo Ren has) heard of this girl.”
It certainly throws a wrench in the spokes for anyone who thinks Kylo and Rey trained together in their younger days. It also leads us to wonder just where Rey came from, if not from Luke’s fledgling Jedi Academy.
4. Han Solo movie is set to “break some rules”
Bringing in Phil Lord and Chris Miller to direct a Star Wars movie was always a bold decision on the part of Lucasfilm. The duo is most known for their work in the realm of comedy, having burst into the mainstream scene with The Lego Movie in 2014. It stands to reason that their approach to Star Wars will be far from typical, which is evidenced by statements from the cinematographer for Han Solo.
It’s gonna feel like a Star Wars film, but we’re definitely gonna break some rules, and we’re encouraged to do that. Visually, narratively that’s a good mandate. They really are about, from what I’ve seen so far, supporting up and coming artists, artists who have a strong vision and voice and perspective, and they really wanna permeate the films with those kinds of voices.
Given their comedic background, Lord and Miller are bound to infuse their unique brand of clever humor into the Han Solo origin story, and from the sound of it, they’re being given a long leash. It’s encouraging to say the least too, especially when you see a major studio giving its creative types room to take risks.
