‘Star Wars’ Signals: A Stunning ‘Star Wars’ Fan-Film and More
Welcome to our weekly Star Wars roundup! With Disney ramping up the franchise on all cylinders, there’s tons of exciting stuff in the way of news, rumors, and clips. We’ve picked out the best Star Wars stories the Internet has to offer, bringing you everything you need to know about the world’s favorite sci-fi series.
1. Battlefront shows us Endor after the destruction of the Death Star
Star Wars: Battlefront is as much a part of the Disney’s new-canon universe as The Force Awakens, taking us back to the struggle between the Rebellion and the Empire. The latest free content from EA Games came loaded with a massive new map, packed with exciting new goodies for fans. The map, “Survivors of Endor,” features the scorched landscape of the forest moon directly after the explosion of the second Death Star. It’s a harrowing look at the aftermath of the climactic Return of the Jedi battle, while giving players a chance to explore even more of Endor (beyond the unfortunate standalone Ewok movies released in the 80s).
2. A Darth Maul fan-film that feels just like the real deal
There’s a grand tradition of fan-films within the Star Wars universe, proliferated by the rise of media like YouTube and Vimeo. One bold group of fans took things to the next level, creating their own Darth Maul-centric feature, complete with stunning special effects, a dead ringer for Emperor Palpatine, and some incredible lightsaber choreography. The runtime is up around 17 minutes, so be sure to set aside some time before you dive in. Trust us when we say, it’s more than worth multiple viewings.
3. Han Solo’s origin movie will heavily feature a certain Wookiee
As of now, we still don’t know who will be cast in the lead role in Disney’s planned Han Solo origin movie, but it doesn’t mean we’re short on other details. LEGO Movie masterminds Phil Lord and Chris Miller are already signed on to direct, giving us a pretty good idea of the creative direction the film will head in. Bob Iger recently dished on more to The Wrap, hinting that Han Solo isn’t the only one getting an origin story: Per Iger, Solo will be joined by his literal partner in crime, Chewbacca. Combine that with the post-Return of the Jedi Han/Chewie-centric novel coming out this summer, and soon we’ll have the full story on one of sci-fi’s greatest partnerships.
4. J.J. Abrams admits to one glaring mistake in The Force Awakens
Most fans agree that Star Wars: The Force Awakens was about as faithful and thrilling a sequel as J.J. Abrams could have provided. There’s one particular scene though that sticks out like a sore thumb: a loving embrace shared by perfect strangers Rey and Leia, following the death of Han Solo. There’s a strong argument to made that Chewbacca was slighted when he was left out of that brief moment of mourning, and now we know that Abrams agrees, thanks to an interview in Slash Film.
That was probably one of the mistakes I made in that. My thinking at the time was that Chewbacca, despite the pain he was feeling, was focused on trying to save Finn and getting him taken care of … Had Chewbacca not been where he was, you probably wouldn’t have thought of it. But because he was right there, passed by Leia, it felt almost like a slight, which was definitely not the intention.
That’s not to minimize the budding relationship between Leia and Rey, but it does beg the question as to why Chewbacca, Han’s closest friend and companion, wasn’t more prominently featured in that moment. Either way, it’s a moot point now, with Abrams having explained the situation in detail.
