‘Star Wars’ Signals: J.J. Abrams’s Idea for a ‘Star Wars’ Spinoff
Welcome to our weekly Star Wars roundup! With Disney ramping up the franchise on all cylinders, there’s tons of exciting stuff in the way of news, rumors, and clips. We’ve picked out the best Star Wars stories the internet has to offer, bringing you everything you need to know about the world’s favorite sci-fi series.
1. The latest from Season 3 of Star Wars Rebels
Last week’s Star Wars celebration in London gave us tons of exciting new information concerning Episode VIII, Rogue One, and even the Han Solo movie. Fans of the franchise’s animated shows got a treat too, in the form of the first full-length trailer for the third season of Star Wars Rebels. In it, we were re-introduced to an iconic Expanded Universe character: Grand Admiral Thrawn. Showrunner Dave Filoni shed some light on Thrawn’s presence further, telling io9, “I think we have a nice path figured out for Mr. Thrawn. I wouldn’t bring him back lightly without that plan.” Interested? The full io9 interview goes into detail on plenty of other Season 3 related information.
2. J.J. Abrams proposes a Knights of Ren spin-off movie
J.J. Abrams may be done directing Star Wars movies (at least for now), but he’s still an integral part of the franchise’s plans for the future. Never one to stay idle for long, Abrams signed on as a producer for both Star Trek Beyond and Star Wars: Episode VIII. In a press conference promoting the former, a Collider reporter asked him about potential ideas for Star Wars spin-offs, leading to an intriguing answer: “I guess the one thing I would say is there’s a Knights of Ren story that I think would be pretty cool to tell.” We don’t know much about the mysterious order led by Kylo Ren and with 30 years of untold stories between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens, it would make a whole lot of sense in terms of a standalone film.
3. Rogue One‘s cast dishes on what’s to come
While many fans thought they’d be getting a full-length trailer for Rogue One last week, they ended up getting the next best thing. A behind-the-scenes reel gave us an in-depth look at the process for filming the movie and provided a look at the overall aesthetic of the story. At London’s Star Wars celebration, the cast sat down with ABC to talk more Rogue One details. Lucasfilm head, Kathleen Kennedy commented, “The characters in what is truly an action adventure story are going to run into some fairly complex obstacles. So they will confront things that may result in a little bit of sadness, but a lot of hope. There’s always hope.”
The cast went on to describe each of their individual roles in the film, including Felicity Jones’s description of Jyn Erso as “an absolute survivor” with “moments of great vulnerability.” We still don’t have our promised full-length trailer, but with just five months to go before the film releases in theaters, we can’t imagine it’ll be much longer until we do.
4. Star Wars: Battlefront unveils upgraded single-player mode
The folks over at EA and DICE have been slowly but surely updating and improving Star Wars: Battlefront since it’s release in November 2015. What was before a game plagued by a lack of content now has provided players with more content than they know what to do with. Next up on the docket: A newly unveiled single-player mode. It’s something fans have been asking after since the game came out. The setting will now be introduced in the form of “Skirmish” mode. The new addition allows players to go offline for popular modes like Fighter Squadron and Walker Assault, relieving some of the pressure of going toe-to-toe with seasoned online players.
