‘Star Wars’ Signals: A Crazy Rey/’Rogue One’ Theory and More
Welcome to our weekly Star Wars roundup! With Disney ramping up the franchise on all cylinders, there’s tons of exciting stuff in the way of news, rumors, and clips. We’ve picked out the best Star Wars stories the internet has to offer, bringing you everything you need to know about the world’s favorite sci-fi series.
1. The original trilogy returns to theaters
Star Wars mania is already in full gear with the promise of more new movies on the horizon. Soon we’ll get a chance to return to where it all began, marked by a limited cinematic run for the original trilogy. Alamo Drafthouse will be bringing the films to select theaters in major cities like San Francisco, New York, Los Angeles, Boston, and Denver, presented in the 1997 pre-release format (spoiler: Greedo shoots first). Tickets appropriately go on sale May 4, so mark those calendars now.
2. The mystery behind C-3PO’s red arm in The Force Awakens is revealed
Lots of familiar faces in The Force Awakens looked different, and it’s no huge surprise: A lot can change in 30 years. Curiously, C-3PO was sporting a new red arm, the origin of which was left up in the air by writer/director J.J. Abrams. A clash with actor Anthony Daniels led to Abrams restoring the protocol droid’s original arm by the end of the movie, but the mystery of the red arm still loomed large. We finally have some answers now though. They come in the form of the first issue of C-3PO’s standalone comic, and believe it or not, it’s actually a solid story.
The tale follows C-3PO and a group of droids stranded on a hostile planet together, having captured a First Order droid named Omri, who’s holding information on the capture of Admiral Ackbar. Omri’s nihilistic musings plays wonderfully off of Threepio’s dutiful personality. In the end (spoilers ahead), Omri gives his life to save Threepio, who himself loses an arm to a giant alien spider. C-3PO then decides to sport Omri’s red arm to honor his sacrifice (pictured above), closing the book on the mystery once and for all.
3. Is Jyn Erso Rey’s mother? Daisy Ridley gives us an answer
There’s been shortage of crazy fan theories surrounding the identity of Rey’s family. The latest comes hot on the heels of Rogue One‘s first trailer, with many people pointing to the possibility of Felicity Jones’s Jyn Erso (above) being Rey’s mother. The physical similarities are definitely there, and it wouldn’t be a stretch for the franchise to connect the first Anthology movie to TFA directly. Alas, it’s not likely, confirmed to MTV directly by Daisy Ridley herself.
“I’m not being funny you guys, but just because she’s white and got brown hair… it doesn’t mean she’s my mom,” Ridley told Josh Horowitz at the MTV Movie Awards. We’ll just have to wait until Episode VIII to find out for sure, but it seems like this theory can officially be put to rest.
4. Star Wars: Battlefront adding Lando Calrissian in Bespin DLC this June
Star Wars: Battlefront has slowly but surely been adding new content to a game that lots of fans felt was unfinished when it was released last year. Now months later, EA has added tons of maps and heroes to go along with the recently-released Outer Rim DLC, and that’s only the beginning. Come June, the Bespin expansion will include Lando Calrissian and the bounty hunter Dengar, while putting players right in the middle of brand new Cloud City maps. You can peep all the details here, and grab Battlefront on Amazon now.
