Welcome to our weekly Star Wars roundup! With Disney ramping up the franchise on all cylinders, there’s tons of exciting stuff in the way of news, rumors, and clips. We’ve picked out the best Star Wars stories the internet has to offer, bringing you everything you need to know about the world’s favorite sci-fi series.
1. Details surface concerning the massive scope of Rogue One‘s reshoots
When news first surfaced concerning the Rogue One crew getting called in for reshoots, it was difficult to figure out what exactly was going on. Most of the predominant early rumors were of the “don’t sweat it, everything’s fine” variety, with one source claiming they were mostly used to insert a cameo for an unnamed character. Recent reports though seem to contradict all that, hinting at much wider changes across the board.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Lucasfilm paid Bourne Legacy director Tony Gilroy upwards of $5 million for his work rewriting and overseeing the reshoots. He was brought in originally to fix “several issues in the film, including the ending.” The Hollywood Reporter also points out that this “is fairly normal for a top-tier writer on a big-budget studio film,” and yet still, it’s evidence that there was far more to the summer reshoots than we originally thought.
2. One of the biggest Star Wars plot holes may finally get an answer
Of all the various glaring plot holes that exist within the Star Wars trilogies, the biggest one boils down to one question: Why would the Empire build a vulnerable exhaust port into the Death Star? The simple answer is that it served the plot of Star Wars: A New Hope, and that without it, there’d be no Star Wars, but there’s no denying that it doesn’t quite stand up to logic. Rogue One could very well solve that problem, as evidenced by recent statements from Mads Mikkelsen.
“I think we should credit my character for a few things,” he told The Huffington Post, “but I’m also part of the problem-solving.” We know that his character, Galen Erso, was forced against his will to engineer the Death Star’s super-weapon. That being so, it would make a whole lot of sense if he quietly built a glaring vulnerability into the designs, in the form of, oh say, a thermal exhaust port.
3. Daisy Ridley hints that The Force Awakens may have already revealed Rey’s parents
Fans have been guessing at the true identity of Rey’s parents ever since The Force Awakens first hit theaters last December. As it turns out though, the evidence may have been staring us in the face this whole time. Time Out’s recent interview with Daisy Ridley spoke to as much, asking her about the burning question on the collective minds of every Star Wars fan. “I thought a lot was answered in The Force Awakens,” she hinted, leaving us wondering: What are we not seeing?
The Force Awakens seems to leave a whole lot concerning Rey’s parentage up in the air, but if the clues are right there, perhaps it might be time for another re-watch. Regardless, it’s interesting to hear, even if she admits that for fans, “in their minds it’s not answered at all.”
4. Uncharted creator Amy Hennig dishes on Visceral’s upcoming Star Wars video game
While Battlefront was an exciting addition to the Star Wars video game family last year, it’s only the beginning. As of now, there are four other games coming down the pipeline, one of which will come to us courtesy of Uncharted‘s Visceral Games. Glixel recently published a massive feature on Uncharted‘s creator, Amy Hennig, laying out tons of details about the yet-to-be-titled Star Wars video game she’s spearheading for EA and Lucasfilm.
Due out in 2018, Hennig promises that her game won’t simply be a re-skin of the Uncharted series. Rather, it will be more in the vein of “an ensemble adventure with multiple character arcs,” featuring advanced motion capture technology on par with what Andy Serkis used in the Planet of the Apes franchise. All in all, there’s a whole lot to look forward to here, as the Star Wars franchise continues to expand in every direction.
