Welcome to our weekly Star Wars roundup! With Disney ramping up the franchise on all cylinders, there’s tons of exciting stuff in the way of news, rumors, and clips. We’ve picked out the best Star Wars stories the internet has to offer, bringing you everything you need to know about the world’s favorite sci-fi series.
1. Marvel releases first issue of Poe Dameron comic
We don’t know a whole lot about the origin story behind most of the new characters in The Force Awakens. Among Rey, Finn, and Poe, what they were up to in the years preceding the movie is entirely unclear, leaving fans guessing until Lucasfilm decides to fill in the blanks. Poe Dameron though will be the first to get his story fleshed out, coming in the form of a standalone comic series from Marvel. The recently-released first issue takes us through Poe’s search for Lor San Tekka, as he looks to gather information concerning the whereabouts of Luke Skywalker. You can find a store carrying it here, so jump on it now before your local comic shop runs out.
2. Will Yoda be making an Episode VIII appearance?
We recently saw photos that hinted at more Maz Kanata in Episode VIII, but it’s rumors surrounding a different wise, diminutive alien that have us most intrigued. Making Star Wars reports that Frank Oz is headed to Pinewood Studios in the United Kingdom (aka the place where Episode VIII is being shot). Details are scarce past that, but having the original puppeteer and voice behind Yoda on-set is difficult to ignore as a potential sign. As we know from Return of the Jedi, Yoda was last seen hanging out in the afterlife with Obi Wan and Anakin. It would make sense to have him reprise his ghostly role to assist Luke and Rey, all while bringing a fan-favorite character back into the mix.
3. Actor who voiced Admiral Ackbar passes away at 93
Of all the iconic characters in the Star Wars universe, few have transcended pop culture the way Admiral Ackbar has. Originally meant to be a bit part in Return of the Jedi with a handful of throwaway lines, the famous “It’s a trap!” utterer since became the subject of memes, imitations, and everything in between. While the physical character was controlled by puppeteer Tim Rose, the recognizable voice behind the Ackbar was the late Erik Bauersfeld. Bauersfeld passed away this week at the age of 93, having already reprised his role in The Force Awakens. You can learn more about the talented voice actor in the San Francisco Chronicle’s recent documentary, giving us a fascinating look at the man’s own feelings about his now-iconic line.
4. Screen Junkies gives us a hilarious “Honest Trailer” for The Force Awakens
If you’ve been following the exploits of the Screen Junkies YouTube channel at all in the last couple years, you’re probably familiar with their hit “Honest Trailers” series. In it, they employ the talents of deep-voiced actor to narrate a comedic take on various movie trailers, lampooning the entire spectrum of quality, from “unequivocally terrible films” to “amazing cinema.” Their latest comes right on the heels of the DVD/Blu-Ray release of The Force Awakens, featuring guest appearances from past Honest Trailer voice actors. You can peep the whole thing above, and grab the movie on Amazon now.
5. The first Rogue One: A Star Wars Story trailer is released
Star Wars fans were treated to a pleasant surprise this morning when Lucasfilm revealed the first teaser trailer for the upcoming movie Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Rogue One, which is the first entry in a series of spinoffs known as the Star Wars Anthology Series, tells the story of the rebels who obtained the plans for the first Death Star seen in A New Hope.
