Each and every trailer and teaser for Star Wars: The Force Awakens has managed to pretty much break the Internet, sending fans into a complete craze of re-watching, over-analyzing, and nitpicking. To save you some time, we went ahead and did all three of those things for you. In pure J.J. Abrams style, the newest trailer that aired during Monday Night Football showed us just enough to get us excited, but very little (if anything) in terms of plot or story.
It’ll be the final trailer we get until the movie itself comes out, and its release marked the wide sale of tickets across the world. The ensuing result was a demand so high, that Fandango itself went down for hours, while ticketing for individual theaters hosting Star Wars marathons found themselves resorting to in-person box offices when their own servers were overloaded. It’s becoming clear that The Force Awakens may very well shatter any and all records for ticket sales, and we’re still only two months away from the premiere. So what did we see in the trailer? Here’s our take.
1. “I’m no one.”
The trailer begins with the voice of a new character, the pirate Maz Kanata, asking Rey (Daisy Ridley), “Who are you?” Rey answers that she’s no one, leading us to believe she’s anything but. She’s one of the only actors signed on through all three movies in the new trilogy, and her origin at this point remains a mystery. This has led to theories that she could be Luke Skywalker’s wayward daughter, but at this point there’s no way we can know for sure.
2. What’s that red beam of light?
The new poster that just released shows us what appears to be a Death Star-esque space orb, with a giant circular red light in the center. Could this be the third edition of the super weapon come to fruition? It’s hard to tell through the J.J. Abrams lens flare, but it appears as though something is firing off a beam in the background here. Given that Kylo Ren is telling us that “nothing will stand in our way,” it seems likely that the First Order is going for a third try at the Death Star.
3. “I will finish what you started.”
This all but confirms what we’ve been told in recent months: Kylo Ren is a Darth Vader devotee. If the cutting of this scene is to be believed, Ren has Vader’s charred helmet propped up as a shrine, as he vows to finish the mission of the Sith Lord that almost single-handedly wiped out the Jedi Order. We even hear the trademark holllllll-per breathing of Vader in the background, so the link between him and Ren is strong.
4. Things don’t look great for Poe Dameron
We see here that Kylo Ren is employing some form of Force torture on Poe Dameron. How he came to be in Ren’s custody is uncertain, but he looks to be in extreme pain here. The only place we’d seen Dameron (Oscar Isaac) up until now has been behind the controls of an X-Wing, but it probably won’t be long before he finds himself captured by the First Order. Does he give away any Resistance secrets at the hand of Ren’s torture?
5. “It’s true. All of it.”
Here we see Rey and Finn (John Boyega) asking Han Solo about the “stories” they heard, likely concerning the fall of the Empire. Han assures them that everything they’ve heard is true, going on to include the Jedi and the Dark Side as part of that confirmation. More importantly though, if someone has to confirm the existence of the Jedi, it stands to reason that they’ve only continued to fade into obscurity in the years since the Rebels’ victory on Endor. This leads us to one huge question: Where is Luke Skywalker?
6. Luke Skywalker
As if knowing exactly what we’re all wondering, we see what appears to be a hooded Luke touching R2-D2 in the next shot. Luke is notably absent from the post for The Force Awakens, which could mean one of two things: That he doesn’t play a large part in the movie, or that he plays a huge part that would be spoiled by his presence anywhere in the promotion cycle. The image you see above was also included in the first full-length trailer for the movie, so take that for what you will.
7. Leia and Han
The Leia/Han household seems to still be united, albeit under tragic circumstances if the trailer is to be believed. Here we see Leia in tears, embracing Han on what appears to be an outdoor hangar of some sort. It matches the design of the forest/peninsula X-Wing battle we see early on, so it could be that Han is about to race back into the fray, with Leia fearing for his life.
8. The newest Jedi?
In our first hint of a lightsaber battle, we see Finn going at it with a helmet-free Kylo Ren. Wielding Anakin (and Luke) Skywalker’s old lightsaber, Finn could very well be our next Jedi-in-training. We know Ren to be a Darth Vader fanboy, so it would make sense that wants Anakin’s old weapon to add to his collection of relics.
