‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’: New Trailer Raises Questions
When the latest trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens debuted during Monday Night Football, the prevailing assumption was that we wouldn’t see any new footage between now and the December 18 release date. Lucasfilm and J.J. Abrams confirmed as much in the lead-in to the trailer, and many of us clung to the fact that the only thing to tide us over would be the new Battlefront video game. Fans woke up to a surprise today though, in the form of an international trailer released in Japan (above), showing us a whole bunch of new footage.
Having already gone frame-by-frame with the two previous teasers, we’ll devote more time to discussing the key moments of this one. First and foremost, Rey’s exchange with BB-8, during which she admits, “I know all about waiting… for my family.” After dying down initially, this one line relights the fuse on the theory that Rey is Han and Leia’s wayward daughter, making for the first huge reveal we’ve seen so far. It’s something we imagine Abrams and company left out of the American trailers for a reason, and makes us wonder: Why would Han and Leia leave their daughter to fend for herself?
Additionally, the other new footage from the international trailer allows us to finally piece together a rough timeline for The Force Awakens. The general series of events seems to begin with Finn (John Boyega) escaping the New Order and crash-landing on Jakku. From there, he meets Rey, and soon the New Order tracks Finn down and burns Rey’s village to the ground. Han, Chewie, and the Millenium Falcon then swoop in, scoop up Finn and Rey, and throw them directly into the fray.
Other new footage in the trailer includes an encounter between Rey and Kylo Ren, more shots of BB-8, our first look at C-3P0 (alongside Leia), and the official introduction of Rey and Finn inside what appears to be the Millennium Falcon. Checking in at just under two minutes, it’s stunning just how much they managed to pack in. In that amount of time, we’re able to cobble together pieces that before didn’t quite match up, while seeing more of characters who have been tragically absent from past trailers.
Still notably missing from even the new teaser is Luke Skywalker. There are dozens of theories floating around as to why the promotion cycle has left our main original trilogy protagonist off the bill, but there’s one thing we do know: The mere appearance of Luke could potentially spoil his entire role in The Force Awakens. Abrams has always played his cards close to the chest, and the general feeling right now is that Luke Skywalker will be the biggest reveal yet to come.
Abrams could also throw us all for a loop, but in the meantime, we at least have another trailer to obsess over before December. Until then, it’s worth noting that Battlefront releases for XBox One and Playstation 4 on November 17, so playing through every major battle in the Star Wars franchise will be the best and only way to keep busy until The Force Awakens hits theaters. Well, that or watching each trailer another 90 times, because let’s be honest, we’re all already pushing triple-digits on views for each.
