‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’ Trailer: Luke Speaks and 12 More Surprises

Fans have been not-so-patiently waiting for Star Wars: The Last Jedi to finally unveil its first trailer. Given that Star Wars: The Force Awakens released its first teaser a full year before its release, it’s safe to say that it’s been a long time coming for Episode VIII.

A panel for the film debuted an exciting new trailer at long last, and let’s just say it’s everything you possibly could have hoped for. So what exactly did it tell us? Let’s take a quick look, including General Leia (No. 4) and a key Jedi flashback (No. 11).

1. Rey in peril

The teaser opens up on Rey — panting, sweaty, and clearly looking like she’s under duress. Recent rumors from the set claimed that a fight scene between Luke and the Knights of Ren was filmed at Skellig Michael, Ireland, the island where The Last Jedi is said to open. Perhaps this is Rey recovering from that fight. And if not that, then it could simply be her in the midst of training with Luke.

Next: Luke finally speaks.

2. At long last, Luke speaks

We may not see much of Luke in this trailer, but we do finally get to hear him speak. He opens the trailer instructing Rey to breathe and to reach out into the Force to understand its balance. It’s accompanied by a series of gorgeous shots of Skellig Michael, as well, including Rey looking out from a cliff face and an incredible sunrise to boot.

Next: Rey taps into the Force.

3. Rey uses the Force

We still don’t know the true identity of Rey, but we all know that she’s clearly a gifted Force-wielder. It looks as though Luke will help her tap into that natural ability, evidenced by her connecting with the Force in the above frame, using it to lift a handful of pebbles. It definitely echoes Luke’s own training on Dagobah, drawing clear parallels between The Last Jedi and The Empire Strikes Back.

Next: Leia makes an appearance.

4. Just a little bit of Leia

With the seat of power for the New Republic obliterated by the First Order in The Force Awakens, General Leia is going to have her work cut out for her in The Last Jedi. Director Rian Johnson hinted in a panel for the film that Supreme Leader Snoke’s forces would be out for blood in the wake of the galaxy’s newly formed power vacuum, giving Leia plenty to do for what’s been called an expanded role in recent rumors.

Next: A look at Kylo Ren

5. Kylo Ren destroys his old mask

At first glance, the shattered mask we see above looks like Darth Vader’s, a point driven home by the Vader-esque breathing the trailer plays over this scene. If you look a little closer though, you can see this is in fact the mask of Kylo Ren. Following his defeat at the hands of Rey, you can bet that one of his infamous temper tantrums is soon to follow. The casualty of that tantrum will likely be his old mask, a fact that’s consistent with rumors claiming his costume will get an update in The Last Jedi.

Next: An ancient Jedi artifact

6. Will one of our heroes track down an ancient Jedi book?

Throughout the Star Wars saga, we’ve seen most old Jedi data stored in holocrons, dating back hundreds (and possibly thousands) of years. It looks as though one of our characters will stumble across knowledge even older than that, in the form of an ancient Jedi book, evidenced by the Order’s logo gracing the page we see in the above frame.

Next: Luke mentors Rey.

7. Luke gets his Karate Kid on with Rey

Yoda may have been reluctant to train Luke when he first crash-landed on Dagobah, but that same reluctance doesn’t seem to be shared with Luke and Rey. Here we see Rey learning to wield a lightsaber, as Luke watches on from a distance. His role as a mentor is further emphasized, especially while his young student begins to learn just who she is and why she’s so in tune with the Force.

Next: Finn is still healing.

8. Finn recovers from his injuries

It’s always interesting to see an early rumor from an anonymous source actually come to fruition. That’s exactly what seems to be happening here, with Finn recovering from his The Force Awakens injuries in what we’re guessing is the bacta suit hinted at by Making Star Wars in October 2016.

Next: Poe Dameron is on the run.

9. Poe Dameron and BB-8

Not to be overshadowed, we get a brief glimpse of Poe Dameron and BB-8 running through a hangar under siege. The duo finally arrives at Poe’s iconic black X-Wing, before an explosion in the hangar throws them back. Later footage in the teaser shows a massive space battle, so there’s a good chance that’s what we’re seeing here.

Next: A character with a thirst for revenge

10. Kylo Ren is out for revenge

When we last left Kylo Ren, he was bleeding out in the snow after Rey defeated him in a climactic lightsaber duel. We see him in the trailer sporting a scar from that encounter, having reassembled his crossguard lightsaber. The anger on display, and Rey running with her own blue lightsaber in the previous frame, point toward a rematch that’ll certainly be a long time coming.

Next: An important flashback

11. A flashback to the destruction of Luke’s Jedi Order?

We imagine we’ll get some insight into what exactly happened to Luke’s fledgling Jedi Order. This particular frame calls back to Rey’s Force vision in The Force Awakens, where we see Luke and R2-D2 standing in the middle of a flaming ruin together.

Could this be a flashback to that same scene, where Luke helplessly watches one of his former students destroy his dream of training a new generation of Jedi?

Next: A bigger role for Captain Phasma

12. More screen time for Captain Phasma

Despite being played up as a fearsome new villain leading into the release of The Force Awakens, Captain Phasma got precious little screen time before unceremoniously getting dumped down a trash chute. Hopefully, we’ll get more of her in The Last Jedi. She appears in the teaser leading a cadre of Stormtroopers through a flaming wreckage, in a scene that could very well be that same flashback we also see Luke in.

Next: A very mysterious line

13. The line that’ll have fans debating for weeks to come

“It’s time for the Jedi to end,” Luke cryptically states in the closing moments of the teaser. It’s a line packed with subtext — and one that will have fans wildly theorizing until The Last Jedi finally hits theaters.

Our own guess: Luke realizes that the polarizing “light versus dark” philosophy of the Sith only leads to destruction and despair and takes that as a cue to teach a new generation of Force-wielders about the need for balance in the Force.

Whatever it means, it’s exciting to finally have our first footage in hand. Stay tuned for more news as it arrives!
