Is ‘Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker’ Officially The End of the Skywalker Saga? Here’s What Fans Learned From The Trailer

No one is really gone. However, the story of Anakin Skywalker, Luke Skywalker, and Ben Solo might be drawing to a close. Will this upcoming movie be the end of the Skywalker Saga? Here’s what fans learned about Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker from the trailer and from interviews with J.J. Abrams.

‘Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker’ is the last movie in the sequel trilogy

Just as quickly as the sequel trilogy premiered, its time for fans to say goodbye to Rey, Finn, Poe, and the rest of the characters. The final movie, entitled The Rise of Skywalker, premieres during December 2019. Will this be the end of an era?

Some think that Ben Solo may have a redemptive moment, helping Rey to defeat Palpatine. Others believe that for this to truly be the end of the Skywalker Saga, Kylo Ren may have to die. Director J.J. Abrams reflected on the legacy of this Star Wars film during an interview.

Will the Skywalker Saga officially end with ‘Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker?’

Being that The Rise of Skywalker is the final movie in the sequel trilogy, this movie will presumably be the last of the Skywalker saga. Director J.J. Abrams commented on this upcoming film during an interview with Entertainment Weekly.

“This is about bringing this thing to a close in a way that is emotional and meaningful and also satisfying in terms of actually answering [as many] questions as possible,” Director J.J. Abrams said. “So if years from now, someone’s watching these movies, all nine of them, they’re watching a story that is as cohesive as possible.”

If this is the end of the Skywalker saga, some note that there are a few stipulations. The Hollywood Reporter notes, “if it’s the Skywalker Saga that’s ending, does that mean that the fates of Leia and Ben Solo, aka Kylo Ren, are sealed? As the last living Skywalkers that we know of, should they die their bloodline dies with them.

“Given Carrie Fisher’s passing, and Kylo Ren’s status as a villain, it’s not unforeseeable that both characters meet their ends in The Rise of Skywalker, but this is also J.J. Abrams we’re talking about, a mystery box filmmaker who doesn’t reveal the turns of his stories in trailers,” the article continues.

Star Wars haven’t seen the end of some characters in the Star Wars universe

Although this may be the end of the Skywalker saga, the studio will come back to fill in the gaps of some characters. That includes a series on Disney’s upcoming streaming platform, Disney Plus. This subscription service will hold multiple exclusive shows, including an Obi-Wan Kenobi spin-off starring Ewan McGregor.

One of the most recent television shows to be released on Disney Plus is The Mandalorian, which also takes place in the Star Wars Universe. This series takes after the fall of the Empire but before the rise of the First Order.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker premieres on Dec. 20, 2019. Until then, fans can watch Star Wars movies and television shows on Disney Plus, which launches on Nov. 12, 2019.
