‘Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker’: What We Know About Dominic Monaghan’s Character
Dominic Monaghan is about to venture into the Star Wars universe.
As the final entry in the Skywalker saga, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker needs to provide a fitting conclusion. Director J.J. Abrams needs to deliver a satisfying conclusion to the nine-part story George Lucas began in 1977. Naturally, this involves saying goodbye to some fan favorites, such as Anthony Daniels’ C-3PO.
Yet, The Rise of Skywalker still isn’t shying away from bringing some fresh faces into the Resistance and First Order’s final showdown. Some — such as Keri Russell’s Zorii Bliss and Naomi Ackie’s Jannah — even made it onto the film’s final poster. But we have yet to learn anything about the unnamed character Monaghan plays.
A ‘curious’ look at the ‘Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker’ character
The actor recently posted a “first look” of his character on Instagram. Judging by his outfit and weaponry, Monaghan looks to be playing some kind of soldier. At this point, he could be working for the Resistance or a mercenary/bounty hunter type, as fans suspect Zorii Bliss will be.
Monaghan’s mention of “#becurious” stirs up even more intrigue about his character’s true nature. We know his role mostly comes into play in Act 1 of The Rise of Skywalker. But we still have little idea whose side he is on or how he’ll impact what follows.
The mystery surrounding Monaghan’s role feels similar to Benicio del Toro’s character in The Last Jedi. del Toro wound up playing a slippery codebreaker who assists Finn (John Boyega) and Rose (Kelly Marie Tran) before selling them out to the First Order. Perhaps Monaghan’s arc in the film involves just such a shift in alliances.
Where you’ve seen Dominic Monaghan before
Although Monaghan may be a newcomer to the “galaxy far, far away,” he is definitely no stranger to genre storytelling. In fact, the actor’s breakthrough role was as hobbit Merry in Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy. As one half of the comedic duo that also included Billy Boyd’s Pippin, Monaghan’s role became increasingly pivotal in the battle against Sauron.
Then, just a year after he left Middle-earth, the actor signed on for a major role in ABC’s hit mystery series Lost. As recovering addict/rock star Charlie Pace, Monaghan became a fan favorite, which made his character’s exit from the show after three seasons all the more poignant.
Lost is also where he first collaborated with Abrams, who co-created the show. This working relationship led to Abrams casting Monaghan in the new Star Wars film. In much same way, the director brings his former Felicity star Russell to the franchise with The Rise of Skywalker.
Where is Monaghan’s character in the ‘Star Wars’ trailers?
Monaghan is nowhere to be seen in the just-released final trailer though. If his character’s look was a spoiler, then he wouldn’t have been revealed in the marketing at all. So why is Monaghan absent?
One possible reason is that his screentime is very limited. After all, Monaghan may very well impact the plot but only appear in a few scenes. In this instance, Abrams and his team might be hoping to keep his character unseen to retain some element of surprise, especially if he is involved in some epic twist.
However, the more practical reason Monaghan doesn’t get even a fleeting glance in the trailer is that there simply isn’t time. Disney/Lucasfilm are so busy playing up the finality of the film — it does likely mark the last appearance of Daisy Ridley’s Rey — that they don’t have much opportunity to highlight new players. In any case, we’re less than two months away from discovering what Monaghan is up to.
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker hits theaters on December 20. Tickets are on sale now.
