‘Star Wars’: What Lando Did After ‘Return of the Jedi’ in the New Canon

This deal’s getting better all the time! Billy Dee Williams will reportedly return as Lando Calrissian in Star Wars: Episode IX. In the movies, we haven’t seen Lando since Return of the Jedi, so what did he do after that film? Well, the Star Wars books and video games actually provide us with an answer.

Immediately after Return of the Jedi, Lando continued to fight against the Empire, as the Battle of Endor was not actually what ended the war for good. We see him pop up in the video game Star Wars Battlefront II, during which he teams up with a defecting Imperial in order to stop Operation: Cinder, a plot that the Emperor had in place to be carried out in the case of his death. We actually get to play as Lando during a level, and Lando and the rest of the rebels are ultimately successful in stopping Operation: Cinder.

At the same time, in the last days of the Empire, Bespin is in control of an Imperial, Governor Adelhard. As seen in the book Star Wars Aftermath: Empire’s End, he’s trying to claim that the Empire actually won the Battle of Endor and he essentially shuts the entire sector down, preventing anyone from coming in or going out. An uprising of rebels begins to form in Bespin, though, and although Lando isn’t able to get in there to help them directly, he instead gets in touch with Lobot and transfers credits to him as a way of assisting their efforts. Eventually, the rebels are able to successfully take Adelhard down.

Afterward, Lando ends up back on Cloud City, heading a group of soldiers and, along with Lobot, confronting some remaining Imperials. He offers to spare their lives, and they accept, surrendering and being taken into custody. One Imperial won’t surrender, though, and Lando has to kill the man after he shoots at him.

By this point, Han Solo and Leia Organa are expecting a child, Ben Solo, and so Lobot reminds Lando to get them a gift. Lando jokes that he wants to give him a cape so that he can dress like his uncle.

We see more of Lando in Star Wars: Last Shot, with a lot of the events of that book taking place a few years after Return of the Jedi. By this point, Lando is no longer a smuggler but instead has started a legitimate business, Calrissian Enterprises, a droid manufacturing company that is based out of Cloud City. In that book, Han and Lando have to stop a transmitter from making droids around the galaxy go insane and kill people. We also see Ben Solo as a young boy, and he calls Lando “Unca Wanwo.”

So what is Lando up to as of the events of the new trilogy? Nobody really knows, although he does get a mention in Star Wars: Bloodline, which takes place a few years prior to The Force Awakens. At one point in the novel, it has been revealed that Senator Leia Organa is the daughter of Darth Vader, which turns into a massive political scandal. We find out that a handful of people have reached out to Leia to show their support for her during this difficult time, and one of those people is Lando Calrissian.

We don’t get to actually hear Lando’s message, though, and we don’t find anything about what he’s up to all these years later. However, this was our first confirmation that Lando is even still alive as of a few years before the new trilogy kicks off.

Now, according to these new reports, we’ll finally see Lando back on the big screen again when he returns in Star Wars: Episode IX.
