‘Star Wars’: When Fans Can Expect an Update on Future Movies
Star Wars appears to be at a bit of a crossroads right now. After all, the saga has endured both the divisive response to The Last Jedi and the lackluster performance of Solo. So perhaps the notion that Lucasfilm would put the films on hiatus isn’t such a bad idea.
After all, the Disney+ series The Mandalorian and video game Jedi: Fallen Order are keeping Star Wars alive and well in the meantime. Yet, despite the expected wait until Star Wars booms back onto the big screen, we’ve now learned an update is right around the corner.
Farewell to the Skywalkers
Lately, the big focus among Star Wars fans has been on a certain new character on The Mandalorian. Yet, let’s not forget Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is about to hit theaters. That film will mark the last gasp for the story of Anakin Skywalker and his legacy.
In doing so, The Rise of Skywalker will feature one final curtain call for many of the original trilogy characters, including Anthony Daniels’ C-3PO. As star Adam Driver recently pointed out, co-writer/director J.J. Abrams had to tie up the story of all three trilogies in the main saga with this film.
And while the movie will leave some questions for other projects to answer, fans can expect some kind of closure in The Rise of Skywalker. In particular, the film will resolve the journeys of Rey (Daisy Ridley) and Kylo Ren (Driver). Beyond their fates, we have no idea what to expect from Star Wars, which is an exciting place for fans to be in.
A ‘Star Wars’ movie update
The uncertainty surrounding what the future holds for Star Wars won’t last very last, according to reports. Apparently, Lucasfilm still plans to release a new film in 2022. However, this is reportedly unrelated to Rian Johnson’s announced trilogy.
Despite the planned hiatus, an official announcement on the next film will be made in January. Waiting until after The Rise of Skywalker, of course, makes sense given how heavily it is being marketed as the end of the saga. Moreover, Lucasfilm head Kathleen Kennedy’s contract expires in 2021. She likely wants the saga on more solid footing before then, even if she renews.
Although Star Wars has been financially successful since Disney’s relaunch in 2015, the saga has faced a bumpy road. What this new film will involve is more of a mystery than ever before. But fans might need to simply log in to Disney+ for a glimpse of what’s to come.
Will Jon Favreau lead the saga?
The Mandalorian is busy winning over fans, and series creator Jon Favreau — perhaps unsurprisingly — is being heavily tipped as a key part of Star Wars‘ future. If Disney is going to promote in-house, Favreau is an easy pick. Consider the success of live-action remakes like The Lion King and The Jungle Book. Then, of course, he kickstarted the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Iron Man.
Right now, we don’t know how Favreau may be involved. Will he take on more executive control at Lucasfilm? Or will Kennedy give him free rein to direct the next big-screen entry in the saga? We’ll apparently find out in early 2020.
But more than ever, it is looking like The Mandalorian will provide the template for how Lucasfilm will grow Star Wars beyond its Skywalker focus. Until we learn more, let’s just hope The Rise of Skywalker sticks the landing.
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker hits theaters on December 20.
