Here’s Everything We Know About ‘Steven Universe: The Movie’
Cartoon Network’s Steven Universe has become cult favorite since its debut in 2013. Created by animator/writer Rebecca Sugar, the series follows 14-year-old Steven as he navigates everyday teen and family life while defending the world from alien invaders.
As part of the Crystal Gems, the half-human, half-gem has seen his share of trouble but always manages to face what’s in front of him with intelligence, heart, compassion, and wit. Five seasons have passed and once again, fans are unsure about the fate of this beloved character.
Called a climactic showdown by Polygon, the season five finale was full of action, revelations, and realizations, but some part of it also felt final. Is the magic over for Steven Universe, Garnet, Pearl, Amethyst, and the rest of the Gems?
Nope, not quite, friends. Steven Universe: The Movie will premiere on Cartoon Network this fall. The original announcement came during Comic Con 2018, and fans are elated that Steven will be back for a full-blown movie. Want to know the deets?
What the movie is about
So far, Rebecca Sugar and Cartoon Network have not released much about the plot, but they have shared that it will be a musical. If you’ve ever watched the show, then you already know that there’s lots of singing, rapping, and original composition in the episodes. With a movie like this, know that Rebecca Sugar’s songwriting skills will really get to shine.
Fans hope to see more Opal, Fusions, and other members of Steven’s Gem family. Those tidbits have not been revealed, though viewers can definitely count on Steven facing a new challenge that will test his mettle but not break his cheerful spirit. A press release from Warner Media stated this:
“The epic music-filled adventure for Steven and his friends will overflow with more new songs and music than ever before. In his first television movie scheduled for this fall, Steven thinks his time defending the Earth is over, but when a new threat comes to Beach City, Steven faces his biggest challenge yet.”
Who’s involved with the ‘Steven Universe’ movie
This month, Carton Network shared that not only will Sugar helm the fun project, but some other cool players are joining the saga. Estelle will be starring in her original role as Garnet, and actress Uzo Aduba of Orange is the New Black will reprise her guest role as Bismuth. Recently, it’s also been revealed that Chance the Rapper, Gallant, Aimee Mann, and Tony winner Patty LuPone are among the talented folks who will contribute to the movie.
Warner provided a small listing of who will be featured in the upcoming movie. Here’s a sample of who will be showcasing their vocal abilities:
Patti LuPone as (Yellow Diamond)
Christine Ebersole (as White Diamond)
Lisa Hannigan (as Blue Diamond)
Zach Callison (as Steven Universe)
Deedee Magno Hall (as Pearl)

Charlyne Yi (as Ruby)

More than likely, Cartoon Network will air the special a few times after its premiere date, but that shouldn’t deter diehard members of the fandom from buying the DVD or soundtrack when they’re available. Make space on your DVRs and get ready to sing—and rap—along with the Gems and the people of Beach City.
