Stevie Nicks is an inspiration to many, but she still has people she looks up to. She reflected on one person she thinks of as an exceptionally bright light. The Fleetwood Mac singer shared why she thinks this person is so inspirational and a personal hero of hers.

Stevie Nicks shared the people who she admired in the past

Before joining Fleetwood Mac, Nicks was a young musician trying to kickstart her career. She took inspiration from the artists she admired. While in her band Fritz, Nicks opened for Janis Joplin in California.

“I got to be very close to Janis and watch her do an entire hour-and-a-half show,” Nicks told NPR. “She was a very little girl. She wasn’t especially pretty. But when she walked on that stage she was a knockout. And she was a hard rock singer. And she could hold that audience in her hands. So I got big attitude, big voice. And she didn’t take any s*** from anybody. So I got that from her.”

She also mined musical inspiration from Jimi Hendrix and Grace Slick.

“So I got the flamboyancy and the attitude from Janis and then I got the humbleness and the grace from Jimi Hendrix,” she explained. “And then one other thing, I got a little bit of slinky from Grace Slick.”

She revealed her current hero

More recently, Nicks pointed out a person she looks up to, though her hero likely doesn’t provide much musical inspiration. Nicks revealed that she considers Michelle Obama her personal hero because of her grace.

“Michelle Obama, because she has such an optimistic outlook and she was able to move into the White House with kids and do such a beautiful, graceful job,” she told Rolling Stone. “That had to be really hard.”

Nicks shared that her admiration of Obama grew after spending a period of time with her own family.

“After spending two weeks with my family for the holidays, which was long and emotionally difficult, I know that’s super hard,” she said. “I think she’s wisdom personified.”

Many artists name Stevie Nicks as an inspiration to themselves

Nicks finds inspiration in the people around her, but many look up to her as well.

“I never thought I’d be able to say I met Stevie Nicks, and the fact that I can say still blows my mind,” Alana Haim said in a conversation with Red Bull Music. “She’s the best person on this planet.”

Harry Styles, who Nicks has befriended, also looks up to her, both musically and personally. He shared his feelings while inducting her into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for the second time.

“She is more than a role model — she’s a beacon to all of us,” Vulture reported Styles said. “Whenever you hear her voice, life gets a little bit better. When she sings, the world is hers, and it is yours. She is everything you’ve ever wanted in a lady, in a lover, in a friend. Stephanie Nicks, I love you. We all do. And that is true, Stevie.”
