‘Stranger Things’: Is Chief Hopper Actually Dead? [Spoiler]
To say a lot happened this season would be an understatement because many of us are still trying to process all that took place over the course of eight episodes.
Though we lost a few characters we all came to love (aka Alexei “Smirnoff”), the hardest loss we have ever had to face on the show was none other than Chief Jim Hopper.
With none of us seeing his death coming, this really hit home.
Just thinking about a season without Hopper just hurts our hearts, but some fans are convinced that he might still be alive.
We never saw Hopper actually die
This season had a few evident deaths that took place.
First Alexei was killed by Grigori while attending the town fair then Billy dies while trying to protect Eleven from The Mind Flyer.
Both of these deaths we actually saw with our own eyes, but Chief Hopper’s is still being questioned.
So how did Hopper actually die? Let’s do a quick recap.
In the Season 3 finale of Stranger Things, we saw Hopper trying to destroy the machine keeping the door to the Upside Down open.
After seconds away from finally closing the door yet again, Hopper and Joyce Byers are attacked by Russian agents.
Hopper then comes face-to-face (again) with Grigori and the two end up fighting in the same room as the machine.
Jim Hopper manages to kill the evil Russian agent but after throwing him into the machine, rays of electricity shoot out, trapping him in the room.
When Joyce is ready to turn both keys to finally destroy the machine, Hopper nods at her and a huge explosion is heard.
The screen goes black, and when the scene comes back, we see the other Russians in bio-containment suits explode, but Hopper is nowhere to be found.
Many of us just assumed he had died during the explosion, but we never actually saw him get killed.
Hopper could most definitely be “The American”
Along with not seeing Jim Hopper actually die, fans have also pointed out that they don’t think producers would kill off a main character that easily.
All of the characters who’ve ended up dying in the show have all been supporting roles.
Since Hopper is one of the main characters, we can assume that his story is far from over.
It also helps that the mid-credit scene also gave us a hint that Hopper could still be alive.
The scene takes place in Russia and we see agents walking through a facility as one goes up to a door while the other says, “No, not the American.”
They instead drag out a prisoner from another door, take him downstairs then feed him to a full-sized Demogorgon that is locked in a cage.
To fans, “The American” they were referring to could very much be Jim Hopper, but we will have to wait until next season to see if this ongoing theory is, in fact, true.
