‘Stranger Things’ Showrunners Reveal How Many Seasons There Will Likely Be

The showrunners of Netflix’s Stranger Things have revealed that there will be a third season, but they don’t expect the show to last much longer than that.

In a new interview with Vulture, series creators Matt and Ross Duffer explained that their current plan is for the show to end after season four.

“We’re thinking it will be a four-season thing and then out,” Ross Duffer told Vulture. “By then, the original band of adorable preteens will be ready for college. We just have to keep adjusting the story. Though I don’t know if we can justify something bad happening to them once a year.”

Netflix has not officially renewed Stranger Things for a third season let alone a fourth, but considering the show’s popularity, a renewal is almost guaranteed to happen in the coming months.

Based on Stranger Things‘ production schedule so far, season three will likely premiere in late 2018 or early 2019, with season four coming in late 2019 or early 2020. This means that by the end of the fourth season, the actors who play the kids on the show will range in age from 16 to 19.

Of course, just because it’s currently the Duffer Brothers’ plan to end Stranger Things after season four doesn’t mean that this will definitely happen. After all, it’s not uncommon for the creators of popular shows to be talked into one or two more seasons than they wanted to do. Famously, the creators of How I Met Your Mother originally planned for eight seasons, according to Deadline, but CBS ended up convincing them to wrap things up with season nine.

The Duffer Brothers also revealed in this new interview with Vulture that season two will center around Will, who went missing in the first season and has now returned home. They also said that they wanted this to feel like a movie sequel, which explains why the trailers have been promoting it as Stranger Things 2.

“I told Matt, ‘I don’t want to call it season two, I just want it to feel like a movie sequel,'” Ross Duffer explained. “If you have a successful movie, No. 2 is always a little bit bigger.”

Stranger Things will return for its second season on October 27th.
