‘Stranger Things’ Star Millie Bobby Brown Was Bullied, Forcing Her to Change Schools

Stranger Things star Millie Bobby Brown recently revealed that she was bullied so badly that she had to change schools to escape it. As part of her role as UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, she hopes to put an end to bullying and has kids’ best interests in mind. Her own experience definitely plays a role, as she explained that some situations have been “soul breaking.”

Why it was important for Brown to address bullying

In a new interview, conducted by actor and fellow Goodwill Ambassador Orlando Bloom, Brown was asked about some of the “biggest issues facing young people today” and addressed bullying, while relating her own experience.

She explained why the bullying issue is personally important to her, noting: “I was bullied at school back in England. So, it’s extremely important for me to speak out against bullying. I actually switched schools because of it, it created a lot of anxiety and issues that I still deal with today. I have dealt with situations both in real life and online that are soul breaking and it genuinely hurts reading some of the things people have said.”

Brown continued: “Being in this industry we have become so aware of negativity and it’s made me appreciate the love so much more. People receive so much love on social media and then only focus on the hate.”

Brown wants to ‘spread positivity’

Bloom also asked Brown what she hopes to accomplish in her role as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador and she addressed how “young people’s lives are increasingly under pressure,” with her priority to “make sure that children are protected from violence and exploitation.”

In addition to that, she noted, she wants to “combat the negativity on social media,” as she shared that the hate that spreads is “so horrifying” to her. Brown further said she hopes to make social media “a happy place,” as it can be “one of the best places in the world and one of the worst,” pointing out that “there are some really heartbreaking things to happen on social media and I have dealt with a lot of bullying online.”

Overall, Brown explained her positive outlook, sharing: “My message is always to spread love, light and positivity. The world can be a scary place sometimes, but it’s important to remain hopeful and to be kind to others.”

What happens on Stranger Things in season 3?

During the interview, Brown was also asked about what’s going to happen in Stranger Things season 3 and, as expected, she has to stay pretty mum on the subject. She did explain, however, that “There’s not much I can say. But I can say it’s one of the most important things in my life.”

She added: “I am so excited about it because I worked really hard on it. It’s like my baby. I shaved my hair off for it, so ever since then it’s become one of my favourite projects I have ever done.”
