‘Stranger Things’ Star Talks Possible Spinoff Ahead of Season 4
Stranger Things has been a massive hit for Netflix, winning over fans and critics alike for its well-rounded characters, spooky storytelling, and retro vibe. With a show as successful as that, it seems possible to many viewers that it could get a spinoff at some point. While we haven’t heard of any official plans to do another show, actor Gaten Matarazzo (Dustin Henderson) has thrown his support behind the idea.
Gaten Matarazzo on a possible ‘Stranger Things’ spinoff
Earlier in April, Matarazzo did an interview with Entertainment Tonight to promote his hidden camera series Prank Encounters. He also opened up about Stranger Things, including whether he would be game for a spinoff. One popular fan idea centers Dustin and Steve Harrington (Joe Keery), which Matarazzo said he can kind of see happening.
“I think a Dustin-Steve spinoff would be good if it were in, like, a weird niche format. Like, they didn’t do a full show of it,” he told the outlet “…like a WandaVision type thing or like a web series type thing where on YouTube, there’s weekly episodes of little hijinks they get into, like every now and again, like a skit show. That’d be great. You kind of break that format.”
But he also said, “I don’t know if a Dustin and Steve full-series spinoff is sustainable. What are they going to do for a whole season, just them?”
Yeah, a spinoff centering just them would probably be a risk. But at the same time, Dustin and Steve’s friendship has become one of the best parts of the show and could translate into another successful series. That is, if the team ever decided to do one.
For now, get ready for more ‘Stranger Things’
Matarazzo’s comments to Entertainment Tonight come as the cast continues to film the fourth season of Stranger Things. The summer series was delayed amid the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, but production was finally able to begin in late 2020.
Remember, the show left off in July 2019 with the apparent death of Jim Hopper, but we’ve since learned that he survived. A teaser trailer for the next season reveals the Russians are holding him hostage in a facility where there’s also a Demogorgon.
“It’s not all good news for our ‘American’,” creators Matt and Ross Duffer previously said in a statement. “He is imprisoned far from home in the snowy wasteland of Kamchatka, where he will face dangers both human… and other.”
“Meanwhile, back in the states, a new horror is beginning to surface, something long buried, something that connects everything…,” the statement continued. “Season 4 is shaping up to be the biggest and most frightening season yet, and we cannot wait for everyone to see more. In the meantime — pray for the American.”
There’s no official release date just yet, but we’ll keep you posted with any updates.
