‘Stranger Things’: Why Are Fans Freaking Out About the New Trailer?
Netflix just released the official trailer for season 3 of its hit show Stranger Things and boy is the internet going wild. Fans are sharing theories, asking questions, and analyzing every little thing about the trailer. Let’s take a look at what all the fuss is about.
‘Stranger Things’ became a hit for Netflix
Stranger Things has been a hit for Netflix ever since it premiered on Netflix on July 15, 2016. The show instantly became a cult phenomenon with fans obsessing over the show’s nostalgia, young stars, and demogorgons.
Season 2 proved to be just as big with fans counting down the days until its premiere months before the season began. According to Nielsen, over 300,000 viewers binged through all nine episodes of the second season within the first day of its release. By day three, episode one had over 15 million views in the U.S. alone.
It’s been over a year since season 2 was released and now season 3 is almost here. Season 3 will take place in the summer of 1985. Matt Duffer, one of the show’s creators said he wants to start season 3 off with a clean slate. While fans have wondered whether they would see the return Mind Flayer in season 3, show producer Shawn Levy told Glamour that the kids will be “dealing with forces of evil that are new.”
“How many children are you friends with?”
There are so many scenes in the recently released trailer, but one that fans just can’t get over is the trailer’s final scene. In it, Steve and Dustin are goofing around as Steve’s co-worker Robin watches on. Robin looks at Steve and asks him, “How many children are you friends with?”
Fans on Reddit laughed at the scene with one user writing, “I lost it at “How many children are you friends with” 😂. I cannot wait for this!!!!!” Another user responded, “Classic Steve and Dustin arc.”
The rats, so many rats
The day before it released the season 3 trailer, Netflix dropped a cryptic tweet that sent fans into a frenzy. The tweet was short and sweet but it left so many unanswered questions.
Seven seconds. That’s how long the clip was that featured a hoard of rats running into a seemingly abandoned warehouse. The caption — “It’s almost feeding time” followed by an upside down smiley face.
Fans quickly speculated what this could mean. One of the most popular theories was that the caption referred to National Rat Day which falls on April 4th. The thought was that this meant the trailer would be released on National Rat Day. This theory was debunked when the trailer was released the next day.
Fans also wondered, could these rats mean this season will have the kids face demorats instead of demodogs? Fans began to draw connections to episode titles including episode two, “The Mall Rats” and episode seven, “The Bite.”
Whatever these rats mean, it’s sure to be important. This is the first time we have gotten a glimpse of rats for the upcoming season. Rats can also be found at the bottom of the show poster released on New Year’s Eve.
Fans will have to wait for answers
Netflix knows how to keep its fans hungry. Though the trailer was just released, season 3 doesn’t premiere until July 4. This means fans have four months to speculate, discuss, and dissect the upcoming season. Will Netflix drop any more hints about what season 3 will bring? We can only hope, but at this point, the new trailer is enough to keep us distracted for a while.
