‘Suicide Squad 2’: Cast Roles for Pete Davidson, Idris Elba, and Others Unconfirmed, Director Says

All the excitement about the unrelated, non-DC Comics Joker film is contributing to curiosity about actual DC movie characters. Sure, Marvel rules and reigns, but don’t forget about Aquaman, Wonder Woman, and The Suicide Squad.

There is room for the other comic franchise to cash in on fan affection and right now, James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad has a chance to do that. Why? Ever since a sequel was announced for the 2016 Warner Bros. hit, people have been wondering what’s next for the gang of bad guys who are attempting to be do-gooder crimefighters.

Since being fired from his directing gig for Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, Gunn’s been busy writing the script for The Suicide Squad. So far, he has big plans to expand this corner of the DC Expanded Universe.

Gunn announced the cast for ‘The Suicide Squad’

This week, Gunn lit up social media when he posted a cast list for the new film. Among the names listed were Idris Elba, John Cena, Taika Waititi, Viola Davis, Nathan Fillion, Michael Rooker, and Queen of the South’s Alice Braga.

There are 24 actors listed in the poster, but Gunn wrote a simple caption that said, “Don’t get too attached.” We’re not sure if fans ignored the warning or were blinded by excitement, but it’s led to a number of discussions and articles about who’s playing whom.

While Margot Robbie looks to be reprising her role as Harley Quinn from the first Suicide Squad and Birds of Prey, note that Will Smith isn’t on here, leading some to believe he’s being replaced. What does that mean for Deadshot?

ScreenRant reported that David Dastmalchian has been cast as Polka-Dot Man, and Storm Reid is said to be playing Elba’s daughter in the new installment. The outlet also stated that Benicio del Toro is in talks for a villain’s role.

Gunn wants everyone to slow their rolls about roles

Comic book geeks and movie buffs have been tossing out their predictions for which characters we’ll see besides Harley Quinn. Cena as Peacemaker? Sean Gunn as Ragdoll? Those are some guesses by ScreenRant, while Collider expects King Shark and Ratcatcher to make an appearance.

But Gunn answered a fan question on social media about character roles and he pointed out that some reports were wrong. While he anticipates that some information will be leaked, overall, we won’t know about exact casting details for a long while.

That means the antiheroes in this version will be fun fare to speculate about for the foreseeable future. Dream about a Jared Leto cameo if you dare.

When is ‘The Suicide Squad’ due out?

According to Deadline, production is set to begin at Pinewood Studios in Atlanta on Sept. 23. One thing that’s been revealed is that Gunn’s version of The Suicide Squad is less of a sequel and more of a reboot.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, Gunn will be revamping the story and branching off in a new direction. With that in mind, there is much work to be done and the film is set to arrive in theaters on August 6, 2021.

But DC has enough titles coming out between now and then, including the aforementioned Birds of Prey (Feb. 7, 2020), Wonder Woman 1984 (June 5, 2020), and The Batman (June 25, 2021). Until then, Gunn is keeping The Suicide Squad under wraps fans shouldn’t get attached.
